I did the same and order several boxes today from Buds, and just 10 dollar shipping insured ...as the cheaper places run out , they are just going to get higher ... Box call sounds great...
Greg and Ronnie,
I've shot Hevi Shot for years now.
I'm a little out of the loop concerning the Federal loads.
Would you guys recommend a different choke for the Federals loads due to the wad, vs Hevi 13s?
Thanks,
Greg
The stock choke in my Weatherby SA459 did really well with them. I put a Sumtoy 5625 in it and it did even a little better. Both are non-ported, which is important when using the Fed HW's from what I hear.
Thanks Ronnie.
For years I've shot size 7s of Hevi 13s through a factory full choke in my 870.
It shoots a killing pattern, but I'd be up for testing another load at the range.
Are you going to try the Federal TSS loads?
Greg

Yes i will try the New load, but my gun is already setup with scope for the Federal HW 7 and i really couldn't ask for it to shoot any better....The choke i'm using is the Trulock 565 non-ported...regardless i don't like a ported choke...

No. If I have to go the TSS route I'll just get them from a reloading buddy. But I just bought a bunch of the Fed HW 7's so I should be good for several years.
Thanks Greg.
I hear ya Ronnie.
I've got a bunch of Hevi 13 in the safe.

I'm glad you mentioned that. Made me remember I have a pretty good stash of those myself that I had forgotten about.
Why the fuss. It's a simple fact that improvments happen. Tss and it's advantages have passed the Fed HW7 loads.
No fuss. It just takes me a while to upgrade on anything. I just recently got a truck with electric Windows and door locks. Those old cranks were pretty dang dependable.

What's electric windows?
In a vehicle, at one time every vehicle came with roll up and down windows, then along came the electric of power windows...

Funny. A friend of mine in Ohio bought an old muscle car. He took his Son who was about 8 or 10 at the time for a ride in it. They were riding down the road and my buddy told his Son to put he window down. He said he looked and couldn't find the button. :TooFunny:
How dead does a turkey have to be before you can place him over your shoulder and carry him out?

Not discounting the post by any means. At this point that's at best hopeful speculation unless you've personally tested them.
How many times has some company had " improvements" and discontinued it old stuff only to have you wishing for the old stuff as it was better.
As I sit for instance(not turkey related) hornady muzzleloader sabots sit on the table.
It's been really tough to find the green sabots which in my guns shoot way better than the black, "improved" ones. Now the black "improved" ones are unavailable as they were replaced with new "improved" red ones,
I've searched for the green ones and now have a stockpile.
Until this TSS shell is tested we don't know if it's better. Also TSS, and forgive me if I'm wrong, is commonly loaded under certain states legal size requirements. How do we know the right sizes would even be readily available? Like the 20 ga Longbeard loads of last year. Just not available
I have 5 boxes of the Fed's 7's but just brought 2 boxes of the Apex's tss 9's that I am going to try out before this season starts, I agree sometimes the new stuff is not as good as the older stuff we are using but sometimes something new comes onlong thats life changing, like electric windows, I also disagree with a few of you guys,I love to get some blood on my clothes!
I checked my stash of 20ga fed hw #7. I have 25 boxes and set for quite a while. However i will pick up any i run accross, it is devastating and reasonably priced. I am not opposed to change but just cant let a good thing go. Lee
I bought a few boxes yesterday. I like them.
The commercial TSS loads are new and I can't find any testing on them to speak of. I know some handloaders get incredible patterns. A youtube search found nothing but an ad on Apex ammo.
So until the reviews are out and the prices eases up a bit, I'll shoot up my supply of Fed HW.

I have 5 boxes of HW7 right now and ordered another 5 today. If I run out I will probably switch Hevi's unless the price of TSS isn't through the roof. $20 a box for HW7's is steep enough.

Last spring after the season I bought a box of 20ga TSS 9 shot from Apxe. I shot them against my hand loaded 20 ga TSS 9 shot. Could not tell much difference.
I would just buy from Apex but honestly their shipping charge is what keeps me from doing that. They are high on shipping. Federal should be able to be bought with free shipping from big retailers or in the store, that attracts me to Federal TSS. I'm not understanding why the 20 gauge #9 load shows a lower speed though.

They are the reduced recoil loads I would guess. They have made them before I think?
Im sad to see the HWs being discontinued... The HW #7s were the holy grail of a 20 ga turkey load IMO. Im from NY so i really feel like im getting screwed. #8 is the smallest legal shot size and we cant order any ammunition, unless you go through a FFL. #7 TSS is just overkill at the expense of pellet count, just like the HW #6s were. But i completely understand why they went with TSS 7s. They just need to add TSS #8s for next year and maybe ill see much better patterns which might justify the major price increase over the HWs . At this point im on the fence about ordering a bunch of 20 ga HW 7s while they're still available or just bite the bullet and start rolling my own.

Glad to hear that. I'll get to them when I run out of current stock. They are spendy but I want to shoot a shell I have confidence in.
