Title: tough going thus far...
Post by: Jayhawkeye on April 14, 2011, 02:32:51 PM
i haven't had the chance to hunt in the morning yet, but i've hunted a few afternoon/evenings w/o any luck.  the birds are starting to gobble around 4:00 and continue until 7ish.  they are responding to calls, but just won't come into my set.  since it's early in the season i haven't got to aggressive w/ my calling.  any recommendations?

If there are any open areas use a full strut decoy with a squatting hen they can't resist.,

I had the same problem. The big bird I got came to the hens that flew down a mere 20' from me on day 2. I was literally under them the first morning. Had hens roosted in the tree I was under. Then the second morning  they were roosted about 60yds away and flew down right to me. Then there he was and down he went. Otherwise the only thing I could call in was jakes. The toms would only come about 20yds away from the hens. They had no problem responding, just couldn't commit. The second bird I took had 4 jakes with him, I was in there line of travel.

Just keep after them. I wouldn't get to drastic and hunt a roost yet. I would definitely try ramping up the calling though. Using a strutter would be something I would definitely try. I'd even try putting out every deke I had. Try some fighting purrs also. They also were really responding well to kee kee's and lost yelping.

lol!  i've already been practicing my fighting purrs!  it worked 5 years ago.  i haven't used it since.  i've never heard a kee kee in the spring yet?  what about an assembly call?  i've only heard assembly calls used right before big storms.  i'll be out there the next two days throwing everything and the kitchen sink at them.

Between the awful weather and birds playing hard to get..... I am still a 0...... I am not pulling my weight for the team yet and I am very sorry..... Still several weeks left so I am confident on hopefully getting atleast 1.

That makes two of us buddy. It certainly hasn't been due to lack of trying on my part. I just been getting my butt kicked by a smart old bird.
