Title: Buckeye burl pot for a service member
Post by: lightsoutcalls on February 10, 2011, 09:21:15 PM
This one has been in the works for about 3 months.  I found some nice buckeye burl and shipped it off for stabilizing.  The piece I originally planned to turn for him... well, lets just say I blew that one... it was incredible... just before I got my gouge in too deep and ripped a chunk out of the side...AAAHHHHHH!!!!  This one was the second try.  I'll be assembling it this weekend.  The buyer is a service member stationed in Afghanistan.  He ordered a couple of other calls shortly before Christmas.  He liked those so well, he just had to have one of the buckeye burl calls after seeing a picture of one I made a couple of years back.  I quoted him $120, as I hadn't been able to find nice buckeye burl in some time.  I also have 4 shipping charges involved in the blanks from purchase to shipping to customer, as well as $11 per pound of wood in stabilizing. I hope he likes it.  I do have one more blank of this wood... just in case.

Wendell, that is one of the prettiest calls I think I have ever seen.  You give me a little time and we are going to hook up.  I have always wanted one of your pots.  I love those laminates that you recently done as well.  Do you have anymore of that there feathercrotch walnut that you made on that laminate call that was so pretty?

It's going to be black anodized aluminum.  It will have a santos zebra dymondwood striker (orange and charcoal alternate layers) as he already has one of my charcoal silvertone strikers (solid charcoal layers).  I'll be sure to post a finsihed picture with a report on the sound.

Thanks all for the comments.  Looks like Ghillie is going to be the owner of the other buckeye call.  The anodized aluminum sounds great in the call.  It has a medium pitch with some serious rasp on the back of the yelps.  It sounds like a more mature hen with something serious on her mind.  ;D

Wendell, absolutely beautiful pot caller. I like what you said about the expenses involved with it, some folks just do not realize what it takes sometimes to produce high end and high quality work. I still have that Black Ash Burl blanks for ya, gonna have to send them your way before you forget how to turn...... :TooFunny:   pappy

Sorry man....but no way is that gonna happen...Wendell makes some beauties...and when I read that he had an extra bank of this wood...well...lets just say an email was sent in prolly the same minute!!   I had looked at that call he made for Bird years back and asked if there was more....at that time he was out.... but I did make another selection back then...and I keep coming back...

I am so psyched about this call...I have seen one pic of it just after it was turned...no finish on it...WOW...it has as Wendell describes it so well...a turtle shell look to it...can't wait to see the finished result!!

Take a look at the work in progress...
