How about Padauk??
Walnut......
I knew it wouldn't be easy thank you guys
A large part involves the sound and or appearance you may want....a Bloodwood or Purpleheart lid will likely produce some nice rasp whereas a Padauk, Cherry M. Ebony, Walnut or another species may produce a clearer yelp. Then again one Bloodwood lid can and will often be different than another Bloodwood. Also it depends on the Chestnut, whether or not it's old from say a barn or a newer piece...inherently, this is the fun when building box calls.
Don't forget about cedar.
Walnut or Snakewood
Walnut...
Bloodwood.
Snakewood, macassar, or bloodwood should all work great.
Wormy Chestnut on itself makes a great box. Buck the tradition of mixed woods and you may not go back. Many woods work well on themselves. Why more makers don't offer calls in one wood is beyond me.
I've made several and Walnut, to me, just looks and sounds classic! That being said I've put bloodwood and purple heart over it and both RAN.
Purple Heart or Walnut
