Title: Late Season Pine Ridge Birds
Post by: HookedonHooks on April 19, 2017, 03:56:01 PM
Anybody ever hunted the public land in NW Nebraska around Chadron? I would be going mid to late May? I'm open to all information on the area. Is the trip worth it? I'm really wanting to get into some Merriams. Thanks in advance.

Nobody has any information on the public land in this area? Anyone in the general area with private land want to swap for some KS or MO Easterns? I want to get on the board with a Merriam.

That's a good track to take - work deal and everyone wins.

I'm begging at this point.... Itching to get into em so bad. Want a Rio too, so if anyone in the OK area wants to swap we could set something up and I'll do the Merriams next year. Me and my girlfriend are planning a trip mid-late May and I want to get after em somewhere.

If you don't have onX maps it's be worth the investment.. just got back from Nebraska

I'd suggest find some public you want to go to, if it has trees and water it probably has turkeys in Nebraska. also pick? a few close by private properties that look promising and nock on doors. Some poeple might want a tresspass fee but getting access for turkey is much easier out there than any Midwest or Eastern state.

Never been myself, but I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to trade that information for Easterns in Missouri.   :deadhorse:

You'd cut a lot of time off your drive from where you are if you went to north central NE versus NWNE...KS and NE are two long drives if you go all the way across...

I've shot a few very nice Merriams in canyon country south of North Platte as well.  Biggest birdI ever saw was down there.  Swear that sucker was 5 feet tall when he stood up straight.

Don't know much about the public around Chadron.  But I have hunted private beside Metcalf. There are quite a few birds in the area. Look for the sections with trees and meadows.

Went there last year. Hunted public. Late season the birds are fairly boogered up. We went to a bar in downtown Crawford and simply made friends and asked around. By the time we left we had 3-4 private tracts to hunt!

Nebraska National Forest is where I would go. There is an old group of Amish folks deep down in the forest that have a bead on some turkeys. Wish I could remember their address.

Good Luck...

Everybody under the sun hits Chadron and after the fires years back it is a very open landscape. We hunted private in that area for years but after the fire the hunting has headed downhill ever since. If you only are looking for a merriams to say you killed one then I would just book a hunt somewhere and save a lot of headaches
