Title: Busted some birds?
Post by: Abomb on March 11, 2017, 02:48:03 PM
While scouting this morning I busted some birds still in their roost trees. Will they be back?

Not a smart thing to do, busting birds off the roost in the spring...i just don't like pressuring birds..but i would think, if left alone they will return...hopefully ....good luck...

Birds tolerate pressure way better than deer, if that's their preferred roost they will most likely be back by tomorrow.

Pressuring your game before season is never good but I don't worry if I run into a bird or two out walking around If the scouting is necessary.

In my experience one bump will not push them out of the area. Keep pressuring them and that's a different story.

If you busted them off the roost chances are they don't know exactly what you were or exactly why they were fleeing. They just knew something bigger than them was coming through making noise and they decided it could be a threat. I've spooked birds out of a field in the morning and saw the same birds back the same evening. It may be a day or two before they make the trip back to the area, but they'll be back.

I hunt an area divided by a large creek bottom.  If I bust them across the creek, it will often take a week or so until they come back to my side.  I can get to them on the other side, but I don't like to as I have to open a bunch of gates, all with cattle in the fields.  Not really a problem, I just don't want the owner to think I let their cows out.

As most have said, avoid doing this again... will most likely be back but now note that location. One thing to do is scout after flydown and use a "Non-Turkey" Call locater to hear birds before you move into the area/timber.

They will be fine, just move on. It's only a problem if you keep bumping them
