Title: Perfection Box Call
Post by: Blairj on March 03, 2017, 09:42:48 AM
Anyone ever heard or know anything about these calls?  I have had this Perfection call for as far as I can remember 27 years passed down from my father who had it for who knows how long before that.  Just curious as to the quality.

Perfection was a pretty big name in the call industry. Made all the various types of calls. Jim Clay was their lead spokesman. That call should talk turkey if tuned properly.

I did a quick search on the forum for any info regarding tuning the box call but came up empty handed.

Would you recommend any different approaches to doing so?  From what I know I would just need to put a few strokes at a time with some sandpaper (150 grit?) to the sides until I get the sound i'm looking for.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

I would start by cleaning the chalk off the underside of the lid with a scotch brite pad. Add some fresh chalk and give her a try. If needed, adjust the screw that holds the lid. Usually on an older call it needs to be tightened or turned clockwise. I go a quarter turn at a time. If tightening doesn't work, try backing it off, again a little at a time. Good luck!

Blair, from things I've heard, the older ones were great and some of the newer ones were hit and miss.  I knew a guide in Texas that used one of those boxes as his go-to call.

It's definitely an older one so nice to know.  Just need to dust it off throw on some new lipstick and see how she works.  Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.

I have one of those old calls and it still rocks!  I retired it about 20 years ago after it thrashed a bunch of birds.  Odd this post came up cause I pulled it out just recently, hadn't been chalked in all those years and it still will run with about any call I have.  It is just flat out good.  Back in the day...I was able to pick up a few of the old Perfection boxes and pot calls from Mr. Clay after he sold the company but still had the rights to sell any product he had remaining.  The old ones were always solid and "go to" for me and my Dad. They are around somewhere....I think I even have some old "new in package" perfection mouth calls around.  Wonder how those have done with some "aging"? LOL
