Title: Choke opinions wanted
Post by: CoachK on February 26, 2017, 09:06:23 PM
I patterned one of my shotguns today.

It's a Mossberg 935 28" barrel, Carlson .675 choke

3.5" Hevi-Metal #6 1090fps= 331 on 12"x12" paper, 299 in 10" circle

3.5 #6 Longbeards 1200fps= 328 on 12"x12" paper, 296 in 10" circle.

My intentions today were to test the LB's with the new SSX choke I bought.

After these results do you see any need?

Sumtoy=customer service, quality, just throws nasty patterns out of 2 of my guns. Don't have one for other gun.

I have never shot or heard of anyone shooting 299 in a 10 with Hevi 13 6's. If you can generate consistent patterns any where between 220-290's I would not look anywhere else.

It's a 12ga. Or did you mean you haven't seen that many in a 10" circle

The Mossy 835 and 935 love chokes in the .670-.680 range.  The SSX, Indian Creek, Pure Gold, Sumtoy and Stardot are a few that do really well.  I shoot the Pure Gold with Hevi 7's in my 835 with Great results.  If your patterns are evenly distributed in the 10" circle and you are getting near 300 pellets with both of these loads, then look NO further.  Since both of these shells are about equal pellet count wise, I would opt for the LB 6's, only because they are cheaper to shoot.  Both will do the job through the SSX at reasonable ranges.

These results were with a Carlson choke. Is there any need in even opening the SSX?

Since your getting those numbers, I wouldn't look any further.

X2
If you are at almost 300 and it can be replicated over and over, and the pattern is even, there is no need to go further......

Thanks guys. I haven't done a lot of patterning, so I wasn't sure.

I'll shoot both shells again this week to see if I get consistent results. I know my shoulder and jaw would much rather shoot the Hevi's. Those LB's ain't no joke.

Ok, I counted the 11.5" circle the first time.

The 10" circle was 267 from the hevi, 251 from the LB's

Is this still pretty good?

Is this 40 yards? Those are two of the best patterns with those shells I have ever seen. Never sell that barrel or choke. 267 with Hevi #6s is insane, what's the lot number inside the box lol. I'm assuming you mean the Hevi Shot Hevi13 #6 loads and not Hevi Metal?

Just noticed that was with a 28" barrel. Mossburg 835 and 935 shotguns seem to continuously shoot outstanding numbers and this may be the first pattern I have seen with a 28" barrel in that gym. I would only shoot the SSX if you cannot return it.

Thought those numbers sounded a wee bit high....
Still good with the LB's if the patterns are even.
Are you talking about regular Hevi 13 turkey loads or the actual Hevi-Metal shells ? The Hevi metals are a duplex of steel and hevi shot, don't personally know of anybody in my area killing a bird with them.

251 with the Lb's ain't no slouch! I wouldn't fool with it, except clean the barrel good, and remove all the oil with rubbing alcohol, or brake parts cleaner. And the repattern it, and see what it does.
