Title: How does this sound???
Post by: eorlando on February 26, 2017, 07:42:20 PM
I have only been messing around with a trumpet for less than a month. How do these sound? Any pointers or things to do different?? Think they will kill a bird? Hopefully the link works.

I'll be damned it worked. Haha.. You won't hurt my feeling if you tell me it is horrible.

Adjust your lip stop and cut back on air draw. You are on your way.

Thanks. Adjust it in or out? That was where I was able to get the most consistent sounds.

Make the tip of the mouthpiece even with the back of your lips.

I would guess you need to push it back by the sound.

Good advise. Experiment a little. You need to get rid of that sucking sound, but you are definitely on your way. Keep it up :icon_thumright:

Thanks guys. Keep the suggestions and critiques coming. It is crazy how different it sounds when I record it and then listen to it back. I feel like my clucks sound good when I am playing but when I listen to them back something sounds off.

Are you using a finger to meter your air?  Lot of control comes from using a finger to meter your air.  Also, the key in my opinion is just to relax.  It shouldn't be an effort to run a trumpet.  relax your lips and draw the air in to the back of your throat.
I'm by far no expert, but I agree that you are well on your way. Congrats on two fine trumpets.  Billy makes a good one.  Once you get it down, try some other trumpets.  Lot of others (a few on this forum) that make them as well.  Try a few different trumpets from a few different call makers.  Find the one that agrees with you and your style of calling.  Don't really know how to explain it, but you will just 'feel it' when one agrees with you.

Marlin Watkins has a 3 part instructional series on you tube that is pretty good.  Here is the link to part 1.

Allow me to offer up some expert advise. No, I'm not an expert at running the trumpet... but with a year under my belt I consider myself an expert in the what NOT TO DO category.  ;D

Kidding aside, I can say thanks to kind folks here - I have learned a lot. Doing it is another story, but I'm learning. chefrific touched on it, and it has been one of the most "ah ha!" moments I've had with theses calls. Controlling the air flow - forcing yourself not to force it.

What has worked for me:

Place trumpet up to your mouth with relaxed, but closed lips. Breath out your nose, and inhale through the trumpet - almost like you are under water and you are breathing through the tube. Slow breaths in, with proper finger / hand placement will get a steady tone on the draw of air. Once you get a consistent, steady tone, you can shorten the length of the draw and get it to roll over with the next draw. Breathing through the trumpet rather than forcefully lip-smacking / sucking air.

Once you get the air flow figured out, you'll feel relaxed enough that you could run an endless yelp sequence as you breath through your nose while drawing air through the trumpet. Marlin Watkins touches on this in his tutorials.

For 1 month in - you're sounding pretty good. Good enough that you are now probably addicted.

I think you sound pretty good. I would work on a more abrupt thump to your yelp. Right now your yelps all kind of blend together. Try a little more pop with your draw.

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. Lots of stuff to work on to try and improve. Yes I am totally addicted to them now. As far as mouthpieces the olive wood has a number 3 derlin and the tiger Maple has a number four derlin.

it sounds like your leaking air, as was covered, experiment with the lipstop, it doesn't take much movement to change it for better or worse---1/32nd of an inch can change it. also make sure mouth isn't too dry for a good seal

practice holding your notes as long as you can to build control
start with the lowest note then the next higher one, when you have that down, hold the next two higher notes for as long as you can, which you should be able to get on a Buice trumpet and any yelper made to draw air

I think you have achieved a lot in less than a month, but it sounds like to me your not, as I say breathing through the call. If you pull your air from deep within you can also lengthen your yelps.
