Title: Sa-459 be careful
Post by: NECKRINGER on February 15, 2017, 09:31:02 AM
I just got one and assembled it. I drilled and tapped a hole to put a sumtoy mount and a vortex on it.

I was playing with gun and put a sling on it.. as I was shouldering the gun and walking around I felt it slip.

swing swivel stud pulled right out of forend cap.
I unscrewed cap and was shocked to see a little stupid split ring laying in there.
I pushed stud back in and pushed ring on with flatnose.. in heat of the moment I then dripped thread locker on it.
It may hold but that was dumb. Should have gone and got another split ring or 2.
whomever put it on at factory had stretched it too much or the groove in stud is not deep enough. I don't even know now.
I will need to get ring off and guy buy some. it does not look like it wil be much fun trying to get split ring on down in the cap.
I may take pin out and put in vise and drill down in it and tap it for a small screw and put a small washer on it.
if that thing comes off my shoulder and lands on sight I'm gunna  be piased.
Every other gun I have the inside of cap or bottom end of stud if rolled over or flattened out to swivel good and not pull back through.
good luck

Before you start drilling stuff, I would call Weatherby, describe the problem and let them know that you want them to replace the cap, swivel and retainer ring assembly immediately. The way that you have described it, this is a straight-up Quality Control problem and they should make good on it quickly.

Let us know how it turns out.

Cheers.

Agree, i would send them a email on the problem and talk to customer service. Give them a chance to respond and see if they have control problems.

just a basic QC issue that can happen anywhere. Weatherby has been known for good support, glad they are sending the part.
