For those of you who use a Spring Creek Long Box, which wood combination do you like the best??
Couple weeks ago i got Mikes, Eastern Red Cedar over chestnut...and it's great..Mike makes a great long box and for the money you can't beat it...He always post's sound bit's on his calls..Dealing with him was great...You couldn't get this long box from me for 100 dollars over what i gave for the box...this is my first long box and i'm hooked...
I've got two of Mike's short boxes, a Jatoba over Maple and a Bloodwood over Walnut, both have excellent but distinct sounds. The Bloodwood over Walnut has a raspy older hen in it and the Jatoba over Walnut has a higher pitched young hen in it. I would call Mike (269-223-3621) or e-mail him gobblez@aol.com and tell him what sound you are looking for. IMO Mike makes some of the best sounding calls for the money. Good Luck with your search.
The eastern red cedar/chestnut box that Greg got is a great box. If I didn't already have a Mabry long box I'd have grabbed it. Do have a spring creek short box though. It's a bloodwood/cherry combo and it's very good. It'll see some time this spring for certain.
I have an eastern red cedar/ sassafras (more mellow sounding) and black cherry/tiger maple (very excited higher pitch). The wood combo really depends on the sound you are looking for. I like them both but there are a lot of wood combinations out there.
His cherry/poplar is by far my favorite short box.
This one, padauk over Chestnut.

My favorite is Mike's Bloodwood over Curly Cherry, great locator call...
I'm looking for a real raspy nasal sounding long box. What wood combinations would produce that sound?

You just need to get with Mike and see what he has and listen to how it sounds...that's what i did..long box has it's own sound...
Here's one that may be more to your liking, a yellowheart over butternut. That's about as raspy as I can get out of a long box.

He makes some beautiful calls.

That's another great sounding long box Mike...
Just got the bloodwood over eastern red cedar.great call, high pitched.great price.
Just went through his calls on Soundcloud and that bloodwood over cherry short box sounds awesome to my ear. I don't think you can go wrong whichever you choose.
Just started listening to some of his sound files. They are unique sounding, I like that high pitch sound. I liked that tiger maple box. One of those boxes are likely to be in my vest next year.
