Title: H&R Question
Post by: Tom Foolery on January 31, 2017, 08:12:06 AM
I just acquired an H&R break action 20 gauge 26" barrel with fixed modified choke.  I'd like to have it cut and threaded for Rem chokes but I'm curious how short the barrel has to be cut in order to have enough meat to thread?  I know several here have had one done, what length did you have your barrel cut to?

Thanks

You need to have an outer muzzle diameter of at least .735 to be able to have it threaded for 20 ga rem choke. The micrometer will tell you where you should cut your barrel. Mike Orlen is the only person i have found that will tap a 20 ga for rem chokes, and he does it @ very reasonable price. On my 20 ga H&R Topper with 22" barrel, its not quite thick enough at the muzzle for rem chokes, but it is thick enough to tap for invector 20 ga chokes(.725 minimum outer barrel diameter). Hope this helps.

Another option would be to have it threaded for Tru Choke threads. The Tru Choke is a thin wall choke tube.

Unfortunately the barrel is not thick enough

I just measured my 20ga express barrel, and it's .762. And the rifle sight imp. cyl barrel is .770, so I'm thinking about having taped for Rem chokes.

Sumtoy cut and threaded my H&R topper 88 20ga for Truchoke.  Excellent work.
