So I'm contemplating on buying a new vest with some Cabela's gift cards and Ive narrowed it down to the Ol Tom Time and Motion vest or the Cabela's Tac Tatr II.
Ive read the reviews and you cant believe all you read because some of the reviews are from people who hadn't used the vests at the time of writing or they just complained about not having shell loops.
Gimme your honest opinions between the 2 vest for those of you who have either and have used them. And..... GO!
I have the Cabela's vest, and my main motivation for the purchase was that I am a small guy (at least compared to most turkey hunters apparently), and could not find a vest that did not fit me like mumu dress.
I have looked at and tried on a bunch of vests, and really like the way that the Cabela's vest is organized, and the durability of the vest. Mine is the Tat'r I though. The seat cushion is comfortable and convenient, and even on a smaller vest the game pouch is big enough to put a dead bird in.
I have the Cabelas Tatr2, and I don't like it a little bit. I don't care for the layout, or the straps to close the front. I found a a vest at Walmart for $50 that I like much more. Don't know anything about the Ol Tom.
Take a look at the ALPZ Grand Slam at Midway if you are considering the Tactical Tatr. The Alpz is on sale and is similar to the Tatr.
After having to retire my Duxbak Grandslam vest a few years back, I had to find a new one. Being more of a run-n-gun type hunter, I settled on a Cabelas TT ll w/o the "kickstand". I actually really like it. For me, it's laid out pretty well. The one thing I wish were different is the location of the box call pocket and that it only holds a short box. Otherwise, I think it was very well thought out. The seat system is great.
Cabelas TT 2 no kickstand :icon_thumright:
Ive got the Cabela's Super Tat'r III, used it last spring and was happy with it.. lightweight, layout is great, seat is comfortable.. I would recommend it. I don't see it on their website yet but should have it by spring.
I bought a Tactical Tat'r II because I hunt in some warm areas and I wanted a vest that was open up top. I do like the layout and it holds what I need. I have never tried the Ol' Tom so I can't help you there.
For those of you who have cast your vote for the Cabelas Tac Tatr, what can you tell me about sizing. I wear a 3X T shirt, so I would be purchasing a 2xl/3xl size listed on their website. Is it pretty accurate on the sizing, and is the vest somewhat adjustable?
The vest is definitely adjustable. I find that most turkey vests run a little large. I would guess that the 2xl/3xl would work for you.
I have a few Ol Tom vests. They are light, lean and mean for those minimalist hunters. I like it a lot, however when I get a new one I always bring straight to my Taylor to get all the connection points triple stitched. That can sometimes be a weak point.
I have owned both Ol' Tom and cabelas vest. I still have the cabelas and not the ol'Tom. Cabelas just imho is an all around better vest. The only thing the ol'Tom has over the other is it's quite a bit lighter.
Bought a Tat'r 2 last season and loved it....so much that upon hearing rumors that Bass Pro was buying Cabelas, I purchased a back up in case it was discontinued
I like the Cabelas better but both vests are too thin material wise for my liking.
Love my ibeam. Looked at the cablea vests and they seem to be decent, but just was not what I was looking for.

I have the cabelas vest, love it
I just got a new ol tom ibeam. I've had an ol tom essentials vest for about 7 or 8 years. The difference in quality from old to new is very disappointing. The old vest is quieter, has better stitching and has much better magnets for the seat. Ol tom definitely took a nose dive in the quality department.
I've also got a tenzing tv14 without the kickstand. That vest is extremely well built but it's a little on the heavy side.

Do you have this vest. I'm thinking of getting one but concerned about the OSFA sizing. I'm only 135 lbs. Will strikers fit in that cell phone pouch which I think is wasted space.
Ol Tom IMO has terrible quality. I dont know how many times I had to sew things back together on my old I-Beam. I have a TATR III how and just got a Alpz yesterday. Going to see which I like more tonight.
Quality is poor that's for sure .Bought their shirts with mouth call pockets etc.Preaty bad quality Dang they are not cheap either, even at half price they are not worth it in my opinion.
I have owned both cabelas tactical tat'r vest and ol tom time in motion vest. Both are two of the best vest money can buy. However Ol'Tom is owned by Drake waterfowl systems and any of you duck hunters know and can testify that anything made by Drake has about a 2 year timetable of average use before something on the product fails. I would go with the Tat'r this will be my 4th year with it and i couldnt be more pleased(unless it had a hydration bladder)
I have had both and I sold the Ol Tom and kept the Cabela's T2. The cabela's vest is by far the most comfortable vest I have ever used. All of the pockets are well thought out and I love the cushion. The Ol tom was a hot vest and the seat would never stay attached magnet in the back of the vest.
Like my tt2 but it gets hot later in the season. Gonna try the it I beam this year. Tt2 has held up well for 8 seasons so far.
Am I the only one that find the snaps for the seat cushion on the Cabelas Tactical a pita to buckle back up? I have to take the vest off to do them up.

I think you are doing it wrong..... You are not supposed to use the buckles once you get it adjusted the way you like it. Check out this video.

You just flip it up and down. Actually the "speed seat" is one of my favorite features of this vest. No more running/walking with the cushion hitting the back of your legs or buckling up between spots. It works exactly as advertised.

After seeing this video, I may purchase this vest. The way the seat folds out is killer!

Cabela's is far better quality. I gave up on Ol Tom stuff a long time ago. Cheap materials, and cheaply constructed. Never again.
I love my Tactical Tat'rs . Great gear.

Best seat design on the market IMO. If you ever carry decoys you never need to worry about the decoy bag causing your seat to come undone and smack against your legs.
Highly recommend checking out the bucklick creek vest
Just got a tatr2 today. Love the layout of the vest and it seems very comfortable. Got to wait about a month to really put it to the test.

The cushion on that thing looks paper thin. Also, there's no real creek named bucklick as far as google told me. I'd go with the tactical tat'r 2, great vest, best cushion.
I guess i should've posted an update before now but i wound up buying the cabelas tatr 2. I think it will suit my needs very well and I'm looking forward to using it, but i have to wait until April 17th. The seat is hands down awesome and i feel like it will have plenty of room for what i need.
Thanks for all of your opinions and helping me make the decision.

Sounds great. Hope it works well for you. I love my tactical tat'r II vest. My hunting buddy even tried mine on this weekend and he might be sold.
And yes, I agree, the seat is one of the best attributes of the vest. My buddy's mind was blown when he saw how easy it is and it never slaps the back of your legs when you move from place to place.
