Title: Mobil or Crio Plus barrel?
Post by: Sealbilly on April 24, 2016, 01:05:11 PM
Is their one that is better than the other?  On one one thread I read that some of the choke maker/gunsmiths say that crio treatment ruins a good barrel.  Does one have poi problems more than the other?  More consistent patterns, less finicky than the other?  Just curious before I buy a 21" for my gun.

Unless you're going with some kind of a custom deal, you're gonna get whatever you gun manufacturer makes. Benelli barrels are crio treated for example. Remington's are not. Manufactures don't really offer you a choice.

I have both from Benelli and see no difference in performance. I've also had barrels cryo-processed and the only difference that I could see was that they stayed clean longer and cleaned more easily.

Thanks,
Clark

Either one will perform about as well as the other on average.  I wouldn't pay extra money to have a barrel cryogenically treated, but then again I have a deep freezer at the house.

Thanks for your replys,  I just noticed that most of the newer guns have longer choke tubes and wondered if that would contribute to more consistent patterns.

The "Crio" tubes are longer as you've observed but I've not seen any differences in the patterns thrown by the Mobil or Crio chokes.

Cryo-processing helps more for barrels that are shot repeatedly and rapidly, as you might do in shooting doves or in one of the clays sports. It is supposed to help keep the point of aim and point of impact from changing when the barrel heats.

Cryo-processing changes the molecular structure of the steel and as I said earlier, the only benefit that I could see personally was that the bore was more easily cleaned.

Thanks,
Clark

I bit the bullet and ordered a crio plus M2 21" barrel this evening.  When I get it I will post some pics of patterns if season isn't closed.  I'm guessing this sight gets real slow when season is over.   I will have to find a turkey choke for it.  I believe I'll try and find another. 655 cause it's kinda middle of the road as far as constriction goes.

I pray to God :jesus-cross: that it patterns well and shoots to poa cause they are proud of them barrels at benelli!  I could a bought a brand new pump! Sheesh...

I'm sure you'll like that barrel. They make some good ones.
