Title: Longbeards Too Tight at Close Range??
Post by: BDeal on March 14, 2016, 04:01:59 PM
Just curious, has anyone tried a more open choke (such as a regular full and not a turkey choke) with the longbeards being that they are pretty tight at 20 for some? If so, how did it pattern?

Thanks!

Where is the pattern picture?

My apologies. I will post this elsewhere. I didn't realize the original post needed a pattern pic.

Sorry!!

Not sure if you reposted somewhere else.  But here is close range pattern with an 870, .665 choke, shooting LB 3 1/2 #6.  Pretty darn tight at 10 yds.  20 yds okay.

Just get a box of target loads and just practice squeezing off rounds. I'd rather have something be too tight up close then have a tom give you the slip at 45 yds and not have the setup to cleanly take him.

Change chokes, change shot and pay load size, or change both. Either you will have a more forgiving gun at 10-30 yards or a real tight shooter at 40 that will produce baseball size patterns at 20. Gotta ask yourself, what kind of shot are you going to be confronted with most often in the terrain you are hunting and design the gun around that.

8"kill zone at 25 yards. I scoped this gun.

lindllc- what choke is that? Your pattern looks perfect to me. Mine is tighter at 20 than yours is at 10. It actually has like a slug hole in the middle and a couple fliers around it. I would  take your pattern all day! Im shooting a Winchester Super X2 with a Carlson Longbeard XR .665 choke but I think the gun may pattern a little better with the factory choke.

Thanks!!

Get a scope if you don't have one already.  I think it benefits the rifle like patterns produced at closer ranges nowadays.

It's a Truglo Gobble Stopper Xtreme .665 (Model TG170X for Remington).  The model for Super X2 is TG176X.  Nothing fancy, but its what my gun and loads like the best.  I have a reflex red dot on my gun, so it helps ensure I'm dead on at close range.

I did buy a scope as I'm worried about missing at close range!!
