Title: Tom Kelly Books
Post by: wvlimbhanger on February 12, 2016, 10:30:06 AM
Looking at ordering some new reading material and know a lot of folks like Tom Kelly authored books.

What are your favorites or the "must haves"?

Thanks

All of them!  But I suggest starting with The Tenth Legion.

That is his best know, my favorite part of it is the first 5 pages and the last 5. I also enjoyed A Fork In The Road. Geared toward young novice hunters as a "how to", but has lots stories and one of my favorite lines that I use a lot "now that I've thoroughly fortified myself with ignorance...." or something along those line. I did skip over the map reading chapter, only glance at it looking for stories. When reading any of his books, try and image he is reading it to you. To me it's more amusing.

I've only read the tenth legion. Buddy of mine loaned it to me. Thought it'd take forever to read it since I'm more of a coloring book guy but it went by pretty fast. Once I finally got to crack the cover, it was over in a couple of evenings. Good read for sure.

Just started reading "A Fork in the Road." Yes, it's aimed at young/brand new hunters, but there is some good basic information in there that it's very easy to forget as the years go by.

Any source where it won't cost me $30+ for a paper back version?

Don't hate on the kindle bro. My wide and I love them. Carry all your books, battery last forever, books are cheaper. Sometimes you want a hardcopy book but 90% of the time I'm using the kindle. You should get one.

I will probably just borrow hers. I can't even recall the last book I read. I know I was deployed, so 2011. Yeah I don't do books. Forums, YouTube, ESPN, History, Discovery and Animal Planet make up my entertainment.

I read both the Tenth Legion and A Fork in the Road and found the Tenth Legion wasn't what I expected.  The Fork in the Road was better in my opinion.  I read another book named Illuminations in the Flat Woods (can't think of the author right now) and enjoyed it more than either of the Kelly books.  Personal preference I suppose.

I just recently bought the tenth legion and started reading it a few evenings ago.  I dont get a chance to read everyday but I'm over halfway through it.  So far I have really enjoyed it.
