Title: What different animals have you called in while turkey hunting?
Post by: turkaholic on February 04, 2016, 06:39:47 AM
Just wondering how many people have sat down to a turkey and been surprised what comes to your calls. Last year was a really tough year for me, but I did get a few surprises. On 3 occasions I called in a coyote sneeking in for a easy meal, he got lead. In past years I have called in multiple Fishers, they die easy but some running and chasing is required. Only once did I call in a Bobcat and she was sneaky and didn't come very close. Also have been up close and personal with 4 Black Bears but, I don't believe they came to my calls but may have felt safer after hearing my calls. Cool stuf out there trying to make a meal out of our beloved birds.

The only thing I've called in was coyotes on a couple occassions. As you, given the opportunity, they don't leave.

I've called up a few coyotes, one bobcat, a coon, and a hoard of other hunters. LOL

Coyotes and other hunters. The coyote I understand but I can't imagine why someone would attempt to stalk up on what they believe is a hen good way to get shot, and the chance your going to creap up on a hen that just happens to have a gobbler with her is remote at best. But it happens every year.

The list.. (Beyond other hunters) wolves, coyotes, coons, whitetail deer came into me in the timber, (don't think it was the calling) but a squirrel showed up at a blind set I had about every time I was there and would bark at me, and while using my locator I have had crows and barred owls.

Every once and a while I get lucky and actually call in a gobbler, but that doesn't happen as much as I think it should.

The normal stuff, yotes and a cat or two. In late April I seem to have a real talent for calling hordes of mosquitos.

Coyotes, bobcats and other "hunters". Called up two "hunters" last year on my lease who were not members. Said they had a right as they were working a bird. Had DNR show them the error of their ways. :angry9:

Missouri allowed the taking of coyotes during turkey season for the first time last year. Had a yote come looking for the turkey. Lip squeeked him into 10 yrds, and rolled him with #5 Winchester LB's.
Called in a bobcat 3 years ago.

Several coyotes, had one run in and grab a decoy once... bad move on his part- died of lead poisoning! Also watched a bobcat stalk in to my set-up, real unsettling looking into those eyes when you're the prey! Scariest part was when I moved and yelled to scare it off... It barely flinched at first, just hunched up and hissed. Almost thought I was going to have to shoot it before it finally turned and walked off!  :o

Coyotes (now dead), bobcats (once 2 together).  My buddy owl hoots so good we've had them follow us around quite a few times.

Had a bobcat get way to close once before he realized that I wasn't a turkey. Now I use a crow call very little due to having a whole flock sworm my setup and make hearing a gobbler impossible. This happened twice and took a  good while for them to move on.

Definitely this but also: hunters, coyotes, and bobcats (other animals that I have encountered and not necessarily due to my calling, have been cows, deer, bear, raccoons, skunks, porcupines, opossums, and one owl who was on a branch in the tree across from me and kept his eyes on me for several minutes. That was very neat).

One fox, several coyotes.  Also had an encounter with a possum in the swamp. 2 of them were fighting and one was in a pizzed off mood.  They were standing on the only piece of dry ground around.  Tossed a stick at them and one high tailed it. The other decided to run through me.  He didn't.

Cows.

Cows are apparently very curious to turkeys sounds and very confused when the turkeys (decoys) don't run away

2008 afternoon hunt I was napping on a green field. Woke up to several hens Bugging in my field. i had a golden eagle swoop down and try and catch one of the hens, she ducked under a fallen brush top of a big tree. Then during the fall a friend of mine was deer hunting that same field and we had not talked about my eagle encounter. He told me a huge eagle swooped down and caught a turkey on his field and flew off with it.. I thought it could of been a immature bald eagle but it was huge and the more I think about it I'm pretty sure it was a golden eagle.

2 springs ago my dad and I were hunting together. He was sitting behind me filming. We were sitting in a log pile in some new clear cut timber. I was working a bird and A bobcat snuck up on us and pounced on my dads boot. No crap!!!!  Still has the claw marks on his leather snake boots and shows it off lol

Two of the bobcat stories in this thread are wild. I would probably crap myself if one stalked me, brushed my hip or pounced on my boots. Any how, I've called up deer, cows, coyotes and other hunters. The deer are usually young and stay there and stare at me a while before bounding off blowing and  scaring everything in the woods.

I've called up a coyote, a bobcat and a cow elk.
I was in TN when I heard the cow elk behind me.
I used a mouthcall to duplicate her "mewing" and she came within 40 yards or so behind me.
I told a buddy about it and he went to the same spot the next day and called up a young bull elk.

Here's my only unique story to add.  A peacock.

I was working a bird and from the direction he was coming I see just the back of a bird sneaking down the edge of the field.  I was getting pretty fired up at the size of this bird until he came in clear view.  Would have made one hell of a fan mount.

I've called in some of the same critters as many of you, and unless I missed it, I've got a new one. Skunks! I seem to be a grand champion skunk caller. I've had a bunch of them at petting distances over the years, and It's amazing how still you can be when you have a skunk sniffing your pant leg. You don't dare blink, pray you don't cough, and hope it wanders off SOON.

I hear ya there,
Ive never had a critter, be it large or small have me as nervous as a skunk that walked under my chair just at daylight while deer hunting one morning. My daughter was beside me and I just knew he was gonna sniff her leg,she would scream and we would be skunked for sure but he eased off thank goodness. Made for a fun memory though.

Last spring I called in a Fisher.
fishers are turkey eating machines. They can climb like a squirrel and kill turkeys on a limb while the beloved birds are sleeping. They also die as easy as a squirrel. Here in CT the state reintroduced them, I believe to keep turkey numbers in check and to repopulate the species. I also think it's working, unfortunately.

I've thought about that myself. Our turkey population has been going downhill here for several years and took a big nose dive last spring. To the point that if things aren't looking up this spring, I may not shoot a bird. We have a 2 bird limit here, and since I've noticed the decline, I've only been shooting one bird a year in hopes that it would help to some extent.

I haven't trapped anything but a few beaver in years, but there's a couple young guys just up the road from me that trap a little. They've caught 7 fisher in the past couple months. Not too long ago it was unheard of to see one here. I used to trap them up north, and they're killing machines for sure. like you said, our beloved birds aren't even safe from them on a tree branch. I wonder how much they're contributing to our low turkey numbers.

Last spring I called in 5 different coyotes.  They were out of control on that particular property in NY.  I have also called in coons, deer, fox and I think some hawks. Luckily I have not called in other hunters yet, maybe I am not a good caller!   jperch

a couple of weeks ago during the late season called a hunter in behind me to about 25 yards till I saw him, made him jump when I called out (also made me jump when I first seen him), I had been Kee Keeing on a mouth call.

Bears and yotes though I believe the bears were more just passing thru. There's a high population of them here. They will shut up a turkey faster than a yote or a cat from my experience. Funny thing is that most of the yotes came in when I could see the bird or waiting to get a shot. Only once did the bird spook. One bird gobbled like crazy at the yote like he was fussing at him lol

I had the same experience here in NY about 20 years ago. I was set up in a hedgerow between two big fields and had one start cackling back at my calls. He came to within 20 yards and must have cackled 15 times in the course of an hour.

It's almost unheard of to see a pheasant around home and I assumed that somebody must have released some here that year. He must have been so lonely that the turkeys were starting to sound good. ;D

When I walked home later that morning, he was out by the road in front of my house still cackling away. Never saw him again.

I've had cows on our farm come in and knock over decoys with their heads.  Drives me crazy.

They're more amused by the decoys than anything.  Those cows have nothing to do and all day to do it.  >:(
