Doris and I left the house early today for a visit to the lab to get some blood drawn as a part of an annual physical for Doris. When we returned, we found our cat, Harley, dead. Harley was 12 years old but still acted like a kitten. He greeted us each morning with a yowl, ready to be fed but he'd never say anything until both of us were up. When I got up before Doris, I'd put my finger to my lips and he'd sit quietly, until she was up.
He was a Maine Coon cat and weighed in at 20+ lbs. He was as gentle as any cat I've known and his hair was like velvet. He loved to be scratched behind the ears and have his belly rubbed.
He followed Doris around the hose and would sit anywhere she was.
When we watched t.v., he'd watch with us and share his time between the 2 of us but he was her cat. At night he snuggled up to her and spent the night by her side.
When we returned from being gone, we'd yell to tell him that we were home and he came to greet us. We've never had a better cat.
Tonight, Doris my son and his family gathered, as my son dug a grave for him. We will grieve for him.
I appreciate the fact that I can share our grief with you, our brothers and sisters here at OG.
Thank you,
Clark

Sorry to hear that.
I'm truly sorry for your loss Clark. My daughter has a Maine Coon and they are a fine pet.
Sorry for your loss Clark. Been there before and currently have a 11yr old Springer Spaniel. It's heartbreaking seeing them get old..
RIP Harley, sounds like it had a good life
Sorry to hear the bad news
Feeling sorry for your loss. The hurt lets up in time, but we don't forget.
Sad to hear Clark. The loss of a pet is very tough.
Sorry for your loss Clark. We have a female coon cat that is 14 years old.
Thank you all so much. Doris and I still find ourselves looking at places where he'd sit and it's very hard not to call his name when we come home. He was a very good guy.
Thanks again,
Clark
I've had prob close to 100 dogs, it never ever gets easy. They (animals)do become part of our lives. Sorry for your loss brother
Clark, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We had a cat, Buttons, who got run over back in June, and I still find myself thinking of him almost every day. Each animal, like humans, has a different personality, and his was a mixture of "naughty and nice". :) Our oldest cat, Patches, is now at least 17, and, more likely 18, and is in failing health. It will hurt when she passes, but when you know it is coming, it seems somehow different. When you lose one unexpectedly, like Harley, it is a shock.
You call can't know how much I appreciate your kind words.
Thank you,
Clark
sorry to hear about your loss, we can relate, we got the kids a kitten when they were little, they named her and played with her all the time. The kids are grown and gone, the cat is still here, she is like one of the kids around here, she is between 17 and 19 and failing in health, and I'm going to miss her when she is gone.
Sorry for you and Doris, Clark.
Really sorry to hear about that. I had two cats that were part of the family for 20 years before I had to put them down. Very sad day, indeed.
Man, that's sad Clark. I had a chocolate lab named Lilly. She was my "dog child." Lost her to cancer a year ago last April. Still tear up thinking about her...The only comfort I could offer is think about all the joy that cat gave you...It's so painful to lose them but if you weigh the joy against the pain, the joy wins out...A friend who you would NEVER imagine to be an animal person holds each new cat or dog and says to them, "Someday you're going to break my heart..." You know, when you meet them that you'll likely have to say goodbye to them before they say goodbye to you...Just the way it is. That said, my heart goes out to you. I hope when you think of that kitty, you'll remember all the joy and the sorrow will fade...
Thank you all. It's been 3 weeks. Doris and I still look for him and expect him to be in the next room. We watching t.v. tonight and a door bell rang. Whenever that happened, his ears would perk up and he'd look at the door to see who was there. Just those little memories. He was just a great cat.
Again, thank you so much for all of the kind words. We both appreciate them.
Clark

So true. Sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss Clark. I'm a cat person also. I had to have our oldest cat put to sleep a couple of yrs. ago due to her having cancer and I wept like a baby. Pets are just as much family as our kids, our spouses, etc.
