For year after year I looked foreward to collecting chestnuts from this first generation American Chestnut/Asian chestnut cross as I carried the Mail.  The tree was planted about 40 years ago when the home owner was given them as a retirement gift when he retired from the Air Force.  I hated to hear that the owner decided to remove them so there was no way I would let them go to waste.  They will be sawn into lumber.
Last year I sprouted 60 seedlings and I'm so glad I did just in time.  I will miss this yearly treat I've enjoyed for so very long.
