Title: Silent trukeys in Ontario last year
Post by: daleoutdoorguy on March 28, 2011, 11:31:43 AM
Hi Mr. Williams,

I live and hunt in the Muskoka area in Ontario. The Turkey population has been starting to re-establish itself over the last 10 years. Up until last year we had good success and the Turkeys were very vocal, but last year we expereinced a surge in the wolf population and the gobbler's went silent. I even partenered up with a few more seasoned hunters and during the entire season we only heard a combined 3 gobbles.

So I have to presume it was not me or my calls but I wanted to ask if you had any tips or suggestions why the Toms were so silent. This year it looks like the spring will be late so we may have even more trouble locating and calling the toms. The area that I hunt is mostly young or mature hardwood area's with very few open field area's, so we are limited to run and gun because we can't glass the birds.
Thanks inadvance

daleoutdoorguy,

I don't why you haven't heard gobblers.

You can try a crow call--they sometimes respond.
