PLENTY more pics to share from the spring. Will post as I get around to it. I shoot a lot of federal 3rd degree loads anymore. Great open pattern for up close head carnage. Most of my shots are typically under 20 yards and when I'm guiding I'll sometimes let the birds get as close as possible. Had a client shoot a bird this spring at 8 feet lol. Usually don't like to get 'em that close, but had no choice, had to set up on our bellies with the bird coming up hill and us laying close to the rim of the ridge. When he popped up he was IN OUR FACE. That would be the picture of the wad in the turkeys neck. God bless.

Those panfish are on steroids....you boys in the south have some nice pan fishing..I can't imagine what a fish like that is like on a fly rod or ultra light. Not to mention with some cracker meal and hot grease. Nice season!

I hunted with the 3rd degrees this year too. I was also impressed with their performance. Killed em from 8 yards out to about 40 with these shells this year. Really like how forgiving they are in close.

Ricky, the trout magnets I use are one size. You can order them direct from trout magnet. I use mostly chartreuse heads and I'll also use panfish magnet heads if they are short striking. Best colors are purple redemption, sassy pink/salmon fix, cotton candy, pink, millie, gainer, purple haze, bison, red, white. With those colors you can catch any type of fish til you are wore out! It is quite simply the greatest lure ever invented! Only lures I carry in my tackle box. The key to catching them when no one else is, is to use 2 lb sos line of theirs AND their 2 lb. fluorocarbon line! I like to also use a panfish bobber and add a couple bb split shot to get the lure down in current. Worse day trout fishing since I started using trout magnets properly has been a 20 fish day, and it was that slow because I kept missing fish and couldn't catch 'em lol. Let me know how the system works for you when you get 'em! A bad day of crappie or bream fishing for us using them is 100 fish a day. I will double rig the jigs using a palomar knot. Clients shot a couple color phase birds this year as well. Very unique colorations on a few. Was the first year I visited Florida to chase osceolas, too. We hunted the last week of the season in mid april and I'd heard horror stories about how they don't gobble/respond to calling well. Needless to say clients got done day 1 and 3 birds that I called to all came in about as fast as you could ask for a turkey to do. Called passive at first for once just to see if what I'd heard was right. Birds didn't respond the way they should in my opinion, so I cranked up the calling more to my liking and the gobblers agreed once that happened. Lots more pics to show off as time allows, only had 2 clients not shoot birds this year and one was due to missing/spooking birds and the other clients son got cold that morning and couldn't wait a couple minutes for the bird to make his way into range, it had covered a lot of ground quickly coming to the calling, but his son had gotten wet and was cold and was ready to go. They just got up and spooked the bird. Guiding can be really frustrating at times, clients don't "THINK" bout you having to guide the rest of the season sometimes lol. God bless.

Yea i have a few buddies who guide and they say it can be the most rewarding yet most frustrating job a diehard turkey hunter could have. This may be speculation, but it appears that the best turkey hunters in the country have one thing in common.MO Bottomland.My favorite pattern for spring gobblers also.

Congrats on a great spring. What was the story on the Choke tube??
Here are the color phased birds from this spring. This is a black phased merriams that a client shot with me. Had seen the bird over a mile and a quarter from where we shot him at, 3 days prior to killing him. He was a rambler and didn't like making himself visible for too long. The black phased merriam is the rarest of all turkeys, they estimate 1 in 50,000! I killed one myself back in 2010, so lighting has struck twice for me. This gobbler had one of the most vocal hens I've ever encountered. Wish I would have videos her, she came to within 7 feet of me, she was so close I could see the dew dripping from her beak with each cutting/yelping sequence she would reply back to me with! Do you use the trout magnets for crappie also or the crappie magnets? Is there a difference?
Ol' Grubbs is one of a kind. Had a blast hunting with him. Have him tell you about that bird. Was a great hunt on an ol' long spurred warrior. As for the trout magnets, yes, I use them for crappie too. I mainly fish 2 lb test and vertical jig for crappie, but if we decide to spider rig or troll I love using crappie magnets! Seems the best colors in crappie magnets are glow pop and midnight blue. Best colors in trout magnets are purple redemption, sassy and white.

The indian creek choke tube just blew out shooting a federal 3rd degree! I talked with Rob Roberts about it extensively and he said it isn't the chokes fault, just that the newer wads are stiffer. Luckily for me the gobbler was 8 steps and it didn't affect the pattern much at that range lol. Now for the ostrich. WHEW! Long story short I was calling up a couple long beards from about 175 yards or so. Had them on a string gobbling every breath and closing the distance rapidly. They stopped gobbling/spit n drumming at 50 yards, couldn't see them until they would be 35 or so. Slipped up to a bush and glassed to try and see them and call loud to make 'em gobble figuring hens had taken them away. Heard something behind me and turned in time to see a male ostrich charging with his wings out and hissing. Turns out he didn't like the yelping I was doing on the Hook's Executioner 2 mouth call and wanted to challenge me in a 5 round mma death match for the title. Knocked the gun out of my hand and wouldn't stop stomping me and pecking at my head with his beak. Good thing I'm in pretty good shape and was a decent wrestler, it saved my life, that and my binoculars that he hit with his big toe when he tried gashing me open on the initial attack! Picked cactus out of my bibs/skin for 2 hours afterwards! Rolled me around and the after marks looked like hogs rooted around the landscape! He wouldn't let me catch my breath for nothing and was relentless trying to kill me. Saw my gun and made a quick barrel roll and grabbed the gun and put it to my hip taking safety off all in one motion and waited for his chest to touch the barrel before shooting. After the shot he continued stomping me and wouldn't stop so I made another quick roll and shucked empty round out as he was dying. WHEW was that close. He jacked my lower back up, knocking it out of place and slightly separated my left shoulder. Turns out he had a nest he was guarding just over a mile from where the attack took place. No clue why he had abandoned guarding that nest and was over by where I was.
Unbelievable story man! Idk what I would do if I saw an ostrich charging me. Where did this take place?

Looks like an awesome spring!! I'm curious though, do you wash your jacket at the end of every season or let it marinate? I've noticed over the years in your pictures that its always been pretty bloody, but this year looks worse than the rest lol.

As for my ol tom shirt, I don't wash it. I told my wife, "You know I love you more than anything next to God Almighty, but if you ever wash my turkey killing shirt, I'll kill you, and I'm serious." For some reason she didn't laugh much lol. I do spray disinfectant on it before storing it for the season and anytime it gets sweaty or rained on to kill the stench lol. God bless.
Crappie have REALLY been biting decent past couple of days on one of our local lakes. With all of the rain our lake was about 10 foot high Wednesday and they have been releasing water as fast as possible to ahead of the storm that is hitting us now. Thursday the lake was 9 foot high. Didn't bother the fish any. Here's a pic that I'd totally forgotten about. I could FILL a book full of fishing stories about 1 in a million fish I've caught doing things such as this pic. This trout had "passed" another leader and the hook was still stuck inside. I caught the loop of the leader line with my trout magnet jig and a trout must of bit the jig at about the same time and I caught them both. This is the 3rd time I've caught a trout by the loop of the leader line. As for my ol tom shirt, I don't wash it. I told my wife, "You know I love you more than anything next to God Almighty, but if you ever wash my turkey killing shirt, I'll kill you, and I'm serious." For some reason she didn't laugh much lol. I do spray disinfectant on it before storing it for the season and anytime it gets sweaty or rained on to kill the stench lol. God bless.
