Title: looking for a good rio hunt for 2016
Post by: reflexl on June 09, 2015, 06:29:40 PM
Any recommendations on a good rio hunt? I am starting early to have my ducks in a row.

I'm looking for one too. Are you planning to use an outfitter or just find some public land?

Considering both. Leaning towards a outfitter due to time constraints.

Windmill Outfitters in OK

Four of us went a few years ago and everyone tagged out. One bird had some serious 1.5" hooks

I hunted with Brian this year and am already setup to go hunt with him again next year. He is a great guy and really knows his land and his birds. He has became more than just a guide but a good friend as well.

Hard to beat Rush Creek Outfitters in Wheeler, TX. Their goal is for you to fill your tags and they will work until you do.

I'll second that. Been hunting with them about ten years with a group of guys and everyone always tags out. Good guys.

I say go public. Whats the time constraint? There is WAY to much awesome Rio country to have fun in without paying the guides.

i hunted with Rut&Strut guide service out of Elk City this spring. My buddy and I tagged out in 2 days. We were shown 3 properties to hunt and then turned loose. We had a great time. Todd Rogers is a great guy and I would highly recommend him.

Big NO to Windmill Outfitters.  Had been there before and hunting was good but this year it was pretty bad.  Still some turkeys around but I'm not sure we were out before the birds flew down one time in three mornings.  Also got dropped off at a few small properties with no room to roam and we just had to sit and deer hunt them.

Keith is a good guy but unfortunately it seems he has lost his fire.  Understandable, it would be tough to be an outfitter.  Just sharing a recent experience.  Of the 6 of us at his place, only 2 birds were killed.

I have hunted at Windmill Outfitters for three years and filled 7 tags. The first year it was a 3-bird hunt. But I have also seen some real good turkey hunters go there and not fill a tag. It is a 2 1/2 day hunt and you have to be back to the truck by 6 or 6:30 in the evenings and it does not get dark until 8:30. So your time is limited as compared to some other hunts. But the food/accommodations are excellent and there are birds there if you are taken to the right properties.
