Title: NY day 1 was a bust . I have a question?!
Post by: Bigeclipse on May 01, 2015, 02:18:38 PM
Very little gobbling. However, I did get one coming to me..
Unfortunately he was about 70 yards higher up a hill than I was and of course would not come down to me
He looked like a nice bird too! After he walked off about 100 yards I tried to sneak off and around him but never saw or heard him again. At least I knows there's birds in the area. Now the question is...do I sit there again tomorrow and hope he is back and he didn't bust me or do I try somewhere else?

Try to get above him, they'll use the elevation to their advantage when you are below them, and win nearly every time.

Yeah but what about my question about going back tomorrow but maybe higher up? Do birds tend to go back to the area they were the day before? Unless of course they were spooked which I'm pretty confident he didn't see me leave but he may have heard me. The leaves were awfully crunchy this morning.

I wouldn't hesitate to go back tomorrow. It's a rare day in the life of a turkey that something doesn't "spook" them. In fact, I would go back today if regs and time allow.

Unfortunately we can only hunt until noon. I will likely be back in that spot tomorrow morning. We shall see!

I'd be there dark and early tomorrow!! Either above where you thought he was roosted, or on the area he came through at when you saw him.  :anim_25:

I would go right back in the morning, and get up above him why his on the roost. Do some soft tree yelps and see what happens. I don't think you spooked him, He well be there in the morning.

I know in my area they tend to roost in the same general area each year and throughout each season.  I'd go in and try to get higher up, level with him or higher, and see what happens.

Yep get above him in the general direction he headed and see what happens.
