Title: federal heavyweight 6s vs # 7s
Post by: turkeyhunter91 on April 14, 2015, 02:16:49 PM
I have been shooting the federal heavyweight 7s and I really like them but this year i could not find the 7s. I still have some but my supply was getting lower than I like and I was able to find some #6 heavyweights. I haven't had time to shoot them yet but I was just wondering how they would compare to the 7s? Thanks

I used the #6's last fall and spring, they hit hard.

out of a super bantam with a mossburg x-full, this gun will get 107-112 in the ten" at 40 yds with the fed. hvwt. 6's, the 15" circle has a good even pattern

it didn't like the #6's with a SSX choke--low 40's in the 10" at 40 yds
"     "     "      "   "   "     a trulock #7 choke----high 40's at 40 yds

this gun with the fed hvwt #7's is consistent in the upper 130's in the 10" at 40yds with the trulock #7 choke, with a nice even pattern in the 15" circle.

I have no use for HW6s. They have the penetration of lead 2s at the expense of pattern density. The only way Fed could improve on HW7s (except for ditching the FCW) would be to load them in 8s.

I get about 115 to 120 with the federal 6s out of a puregold 570 tempest. 90 to 105 pattern out of my ssx and sumtoy.

I average in the 150 with the 7s with the ssx and sumtoy.

I think if that's your only choice its still a good pattern and they hit like thors hammer.

I was able to try them the other day. With the 7s I get around 120 in a 9 in circle. The 6s I was getting around 50 in a 9 inch circle This was with a sumtoy choke.my biggest concern was that they shot quite abit different than the 7s. I have enough 7s to get me through this year and probably next so I will stick with them and try to find some more later on.

After the concerns regarding fed 7s I wrote Federal. The lady who responded stated 7s only will be manufactured, though at first she said only the 7s were discontinued.

With the hwt. 6's out of my 26" 1187 w the SSX I'm getting 96 hits at 40 yds.

I'm thinking of getting a more open choke because I could really tell the difference in energy when it hit the target over the hevi 13 6's I've been shooting. Was thinking about a Primos Tightwad or Carlsons non-ported. What do you all suggest for the 6's?
