Title: Rem 870 / 21" bbl / Hevi 13 .662
Post by: Longshanks on April 13, 2015, 07:06:51 PM
Ready to throw this barrel at a sign going down the road.

*deep cleaned barrel a couple of times.

New 21" bbl will shoot nothing I've tried..Ventilator .655, Kicks .655, Rem Extra full, Hevi 13 .662. Tried all the 3" Win Pb loads in 5's, 6's, Hevi 13 6's, Magblends. Hevi 13 6's had 2+ inch gaps all over the pattern and somewhere around 100 @ 40. These new barrels are 2 3/4, 3, and 3.5 although they will fit Express, Wingmaster, and Supermag. Maybe it's because I'm shooting 3" out of a Wingmaster..at this point I don't know. Only thing I know to do is drop it off at the gunsmith and have it polished. Don't think it can get any worse..

My 24" Browning was being a bear, finally found that Thugs do pretty good and Longbeards do good in my Star Dot, #5 Thug/Longbeard and #6 Thugs. Previously had tried Winchester 3" #6, Win HV #5, Fed Pre FC and FC Premium #4 and #5, Remington 4's and 5's in a Jellyhead, Jellyhead Max, Colonial, Hastings, SSX and the Star Dot. I was almost ready to send it down the road and get me a longer barreled thunderstick, glad I didn't. Keep at it and you will find what it likes.

Heard the short barrels like the tighter chokes- 650 and even 643. Any of yer friends have any you can try?

.655 is the tightest choke I have access to. Who makes a .643? I can shoot good 40yd patterns with LB's but the inside 30yd patterns are softball size. Just thought about it, maybe I should try the LB's out of this Hevi 13 .662 and see if it opens up the patterns a bit as compared to the .655 Kicks.

The Tru Glo SSX is a .643. Carlson makes a .640.

Give the Patternmaster Code Black a whirl...it is devastating out of my short barrel

Trulock has a .650. I cannot get my SSX to impress me whether with #5 or #6, 1 3/4 oz, 1 5/8 oz, 1 7/8 oz. Still want to try Longbeard 6's to see what they do in it.

I shoot a 22 inch barrel on my M1-Benneli, I set the gun up to shoot Hevi 13 Blend. I now shoot Longbeards, but I pulled up my targets with the hevi 13, here are the numbers, the bend shot the best in hevi shot.
Hevi-13 Mag Blend-total pellet count in shot 426.
30 Inch Circle- 383 pellets
20 Inch Circle- 323 pellets
10 Inch Circle- 155 pellets

This was with a Rob Roberts .650 shot at lazered 40 yard target off a lead sled.

Hope this helps, headed for Maryland Friday!FOR opener on Saturday!

Same for me shooting the 3 inch 2 ounce Hevi-Shot #6's.  That .665 Code Black Turkey is an awesome choke in my Remmy 21" barrels as is the Indian Creek .665.

Would love to have one of those chokes but the 100.00 plus shipping backed me off of that. Maybe next year. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like an awesome built choke.

Indian Creek .655 did the best  with 3" #6 LB's in Clarks write up. That was with a 28" barrel. 211 in the 10@40yds. Zero 2" gaps. That's where I'd start.

Ran the 3" LB 6's through the the Hevi 13 choke .662 and got 160's @ 40. Nice hunting patten at 30yds and a 10" pattern at 20yds.  That will do for hunting. Thanks for the replies.
Sounds like a good hunting pattern at all ranges.

That's what I'm thinking. I was turning tight patterns with Kicks .655 out of both of my 21" bbl 870's. (214 and 203) but didn't feel comfortable hunting with the softball size patterns inside 30yds. This will be perfect for hunting situations. Shot the old magblends and they shot good. Not sure of numbers but an awesome hunting pattern at 30 and 40.

A local store here in town has them for $89 I think....I would gladly pick you one up and send it to you.  Save you some dough on a great tube.

Shot the Federal 3" Thugs 5's through this set up. Shot 100 @ 40 but an absolute wicked pattern at 30 yds. Great hunting set up. The more I shoot this barrel the better the patterns are getting. Deep cleaned it a couple of times. The new Rem 870 barrels seem to require allot of shooting before the patterns get right. Anyone else notice this?

*Going to run some Hevi 13. 3/2/7's through it next.

Shot this combination again yesterday with the Win LB 3" 6's and turned:

229 in a 10 @ 40

This gun seems to be evolving the more I shoot this new barrel. Shot 3/2/7.5's through this gun and the pattern was brutal at 30-35yds.

QuoteThis gun seems to be evolving the more I shoot this new barrel.
One subject that gets very little attention is that of breaking-in the bore of a shotgun and/or choke tube. About 6 years ago I wrote an article that you may find of interest. http://allaboutshooting.com/article_info.php?articles_id=475

While this article focuses on chokes, it's equally true of barrels.

Many times I've seen shooters and hunters give up on a combination after just a few shots. It's been my experience over the years that as bores are shot more, they tend to shoot better. I have one choke tube that is 11 years old and shoots much better today that it did when it was new.

Good luck to you as you witness the evolution of your new barrel.

Thanks,
Clark

Thank you Clark, great article. I have really noticed this with my new Rem 870 barrels 21" and 26". You are a wealth of knowledge about shotguns. Thank you for all the valuable information. All the best, good luck in the turkey woods.
I am going to take my Kicks .655 and Ventilator .655 out and run a cheap box of shells through each one and then pattern again with turkey loads. I always do this with a polished barrel but now see how important it is with any barrel or choke that's new. The difference in this barrel is significant after shooting a good bit.
