This has been a great season. For three years now, I have taken a friend and his daughter out for the youth weekend in the hopes of bagging her first gobbler. In previous years we had good luck in getting some gobbling but no luck in bringing in a bird close enough. This year was a little different. The day before the hunt we roosted a nice Tom who also had 6 hens with him. Not too bad but I knew it would be a challenge to pull him from those hens the next morning. Then came the day of the hunt. We got to the woods early and sat up about 150 yds away from where hie roosted on a edge of a field. Jake decoy out and comfortable spots for all of us as we prepared. Light came and a few light calls elicited a gobble. He and his haram flew into the field and he answered my calls but would not come in. I then started the process of trying to pull the lead hen to me in hopes she would pull the flock, no luck. But as luck goes, a red tail hawk flew into the field just in front of the hens, birds scattered everywhere. I told my friend, now we have a chance. I started calling and our gobbler answered about 50 yds away from within the woodblock boardering the field. I moved off about 15 yds from my friend and his daughter and started calling. The Tom was all ginned up and came right to them, 15 yd shot on nice little Osceola with a 7 inch beard but with 1 1/4 Spurs. Nice bird and her first. The joy between my friend and his daughter shared from that hunt was very special and it was nice to see that we now have a pair of new turkey hunters completely hooked into the sport we all love.
Congrats!
I bet you were as proud as her Daddy.
Way to be persistent . Good work on getting the young lady a gobbler
It was a great hunt and although I love to bag my own bird, doesn't compare to calling one in for someone. Indeed, I was every bit as proud as was her daddy. One of my best hunts yet.
Congrats to all of you!!
Congrats to you all. I had the same experience last year, the look on Joe's face was priceless and Emily was 4 feet off the ground. Nice job :turkey2:
