Title: Shooting one in the same spot as another
Post by: ThunderChickenGetter on April 01, 2015, 08:40:06 PM
If two or three longbeards are visiting a field regularly and I shoot one, what are the chances that the others will come back to the same area soon?

Better than you would think. Turkeys seem to be forgetful. They are used to loud noises like lighting. We have called them across a field and shot one just to have them run off a bit a come right back to calling.

Alright I was just wondering because I'm gonna try to take my buddy in there and get him one on opening morning but wanted to make sure it wouldn't run the birds out of there.

Several times I killed one bird out of a pair and killed the second bird in the same area the next day.....

I wouldn't worry about it. The birds on our place generally end up in 5 groups in 5 roosting spots. I go wherever they are gobbling regardless of where I shot the last one.

Not sure about one day to the next.... but in 2013 and 2014, I shot a tom off the exact same log.  Each came in looking for a hen....jumped onto the log to get a better look and bam....  turkey jerky.

Shoot all of my birds in the same spot, right up side the head!! I did kill a bird one morning and 3 hours later a buddy shot his bird from the very same tree. They will be more cautious but not smart enough to stay away.

:funnyturkey: :OGturkeyhead: Shot 2 birds off the same rock 3 days apart last year in Maine. The smaller of the 2 pushed the bigger one to his demise on Wednesday and he got too close on Saturday, serves him right.

They won't remember it and you will be able to harvest that bird in the same spot as long as he cooperates. If not it won't be due to him remembering what happened to one of his friends......

I have taken 4 toms in the last two years from the exact same spot with the exact same set-up. In 2013 they were a few days apart but last year 2014 I took one on the Monday and then on Tuesday I took another one from the same group of birds. They came in like nothing had ever happened!!

Last year two toms walked into the field and my girlfriend took the closest one. I moved my blind about 15 feet to the right (for a better angle) and after 3 days two more toms walked out at the same spot.
For those three days I heard gobble but seen no birds.
In my opinion they may remember but not for very long. Persistence would be key!
Just my  :z-twocents:

I think your chances are food for a repeat. If anything, the second bird may come in quiet.

Last year I took my youngest daughter hunting on a Saturday and we shot a bird that morning. The next morning I took my wife and oldest daughter to the same spot and my wife killed a bird. Feather piles were only 10 feet apart.

Sometimes, they just can't stay away.
