My 8 year old grandson and I hunted a new area this morning that bordered private property. Of course the gobblers were roosted on the private property along a creek bottom. They were gobbling their heads off during the "magic hour" and went the other way, across the creek and into a pasture. The land we were on was very grown up and impossible to make a stealthy approach. We tried to make it to the pasture, it was hopeless. We never saw the birds just heard them putting on their morning show. I made every attempt to call them to us, but no joy. That's why it's called hunting.
:'(
Well, your grandson still enjoyed the show I would bet. They will make a mistake. Can you be in the pasture before first light in the morning? If so, look out!
My 2 nephews both connected today on birds, about an hour apart on the same property, so one of them is gonna give me a hand in the morning trying to call in a crusty swamp bird. Hope he gobbles again.
Good luck to everyone!!

That's my thought as well. At 8 years old I bet he really enjoyed hunting with his Grandpa. Good job getting him out there and spending time with him. Hang in there, It will all come together at some point. Enjoy the journey.

:agreed:
Be thankful you heard gobbling. I've been hunting twelve mile swamp near St. augustine all week and have yet to hear a gobble. I got lucky and called one in that I saw down a road but he never made a sound. If they are talking at least you know they are there.
I agree with you guys 100%, hearing gobblers sounding off at sun up with my grandson was a memory maker. He truly enjoys being in the outdoors and hunting will paw paw is on the top of his list of things he enjoys. He was excited hearing the gobblers, but his want to bag one. His 11 year old cousin shot one two Saturdays ago and he want to even the score. I enjoy just being in the woods and fields with both of them, it's a blessing from the Lord.
