Title: Carlson .575 expectations
Post by: darron on March 25, 2015, 11:43:10 AM
So the 11-87 26" equipped with the ssx did not do so well. As I mentioned in another thread I put up 112 with hevi 7 and 99 with fed 7.

I just ordered a carlson non-ported .575 extended tube for the 11-87. I thought for $30 it's worth a try before buying the more pricey chokes.

Does anyone use the carlson .575 and what can I expect? I would hunt with anything 120 or better at 40. I'd like to be in the 130-150 range, but as I read on here the 26" 11-87 can sometime be a bear to pattern.

Been a huge Trulock fan for awhile. It puts up good numbers but it's real finicky if it isn't squeaky clean.
2 weeks ago I switched to the .575 Carlsons and I love it. The numbers in my 870 are still 140-150 but the choke is very consistent, doesn't seem to be too picky and the pattern is the best i've found yet for evenness.
Can't go wrong with that choke.

I'm also interested in this as well as wondering if there would be a difference in the flush vs. extended Carlson's .575?

not apples to apples due to different gun, however i shot one from my Franchi Affinity 20 gauge and it as flat out silly good.  shot a few in the 180 count and average was always over 170.  there is a pic on the pattern board of it somewhere.

575 was stupid good with HW7s in my gun.

this choke is simply amazing in my 870 (21") with either HTL or lead

The Carlson .575 is my hunting choke of choice. I have many chokes, but this is one I use when it comes to actual hunting.   It's doesn't put up the highest numbers.. but tightest isn't what I'm looking for when it comes to a "real world" hunting choke.   It does about 155 with Federal HW#7....nice even spread.

The Carlson and Trulock are the exact same in my opinion ... many will argue this point until Sunday.. but I have them both and they are identical. One of these choke makers is making the choke for the other... see below..  Either way... these choke are cheap and work great.

I have one ordered for my Affinity---hope it does the job--did you shoot 3" or 2 3/4' thru it?

Mine puts up great numbers from a 870 compact...comparable to a much more expensive choke.

You should like it...

I have bought several different chokes to shoot the Fed HW 7's and the Carlson's is the best hands down. My 870 compact really likes this choke, it shoots a good hunting pattern !
