Title: red dot reflection
Post by: DirtNap647 on March 13, 2015, 09:36:31 AM
I would post this in the sights section but that section gets overlooked...so... I have been running a fastfire for 3 years now love it but I just cant get over the reflection off the front of it I tried everything even cutting face mask material to block it still shines through it if its sunny it lights like a light bulb...I know some say if he sees it he should be dead but that's somewhat true but there are times I just keep waiting for them to clear cover or etc  I mostly timber hunt... I do honestly think it cost me some turkeys they turned around putted and outta sight not sure...whats your guys honest opinion on this shiny green yellow red glare...?

I don't like the glare. I've had birds that came in and they spotted it. It cost me one so far. Last year I put mesh face mask material in front of the rain guard and it helped a lot.

I have been using reflex sights on shotguns for 12 years, killed quite a few turkeys with them.  I have only had one bird that popped up on a road bed and spotted me.  He died same as the others.  I can't say for sure what he saw.  I think it is possible just like it is possible for them to spot other things about you.  But in practice if you are still it doesn't seem to be much of a problem for me.  Now I usually hunt timber so I am nearly always under a tree canopy.  Could be different for people who only hunt open fields in more direct sunlight.

I have the ff2 so I don't have the shield does that shield help with glare...?

^^ I have the shield on the FF3.  It helps a little, but falls off very easily.  Mine has come off accidentally multiple times.  I'm very surprised that I haven't lost it yet.

I have been busted while using the Nikon VSD . My other gun has a Burris Speed dot 135 and it has a Long sunshade that comes with it, I have never been busted with that red dot so I bought another one and switched out the Nikon VSD.

I know it cost me a bird last year. He came running to the gun and as he crested the rise he took off like he'd been shot in the arse with rock salt.
He was gone faster than I could squeeze the trigger. Had to have been the glare.

As much as I love the site I'm debating to take it off due to this but what else is there

I've had the same concern. I just make sure to keep the sun at my back or at least set up in the shade.

I can see a potential for it being an issue, but the upside to the sight is worth the risk to me.
I have the FFIII, and I am going to start running with the rain cover on. I think that will help. My rain cover stays on my sight pretty well, and is dipped to match my gun.
It is a valid argument, and for the FFII, I don't know what would work to reduce the glare.
I do know that between my son's gun and mine, 5 birds have died in the last 2 years without glare reduction.

Not an issue for me. Fact is your not going to kill every one that comes in. I've been picked out without a red dot. It happens........ adapt......
