Title: Turkey Hat
Post by: clfergus on March 04, 2015, 10:08:50 AM
First year turkey hunting and I was thinking about trying one of those camo ball caps that have the camo netting attached that drapes down. Would this be enough facial cover? My dad uses a spandex mask but I find it not so comfy with my beard.

It will but a half mask like the Ol' Tom will hang around your neck until you're ready to use it and you can just pull it up versus having to take your cap off to pull the net down.

I just have some cheap half mask like has been mentioned above.  Pull them up over ball cap in the back and adjust in the front quickly whenever I need it.

Simple.

Thanks guys, what you said makes sense. I ordered an Ol' Tom Half mask off fleabay for 14.99 with free shipping. Should be good to go.

I prefer a boonie hat for turkey hunting and I really like the Ol' Tom boonie which has a built in mask. I have half-masks that I use too, but the built in is faster to deploy. The half mask is faster to stow, but I'd rather be quicker on the front end.

I use a half mask and leave it around my neck. When the time comes I just pull it up over my face. Quick, easy and effective.

First time you use a full net in front of your eyes you will realize it cuts way down on your ability to see and detect movement in low light situations.  Half mask worn around the neck is the most popular style I believe.  I like one that is split up the back with a wire nose pinch.

+1, great advice.  I've gone to the leafy Thugs mask @ Wal-mart, which is a full-face mask, but I can pull it down over my head & use it as a half-mask, too.  As a throw-back, I was thinking of pulling out my old boonie hat this year, for the hay of it!

If they're calling for it to be cold, I use a spandex mask under a visor pro leafy head cover over top of a foam lined cap.  I switch to a half mask and mesh cap when it gets warm.  I always carry a spare mask and gloves in the back of my vest because I've lost too many just moving from place to place.

Used one of these for years with a camo baseball cap. Works perfect.

This is what I use too.  I just like the convenience of having the mask attached.  One less thing for me to forget.

I do a boonie cap with a half mask.  the boonie has a cord that I can just let it hang down my back and the half mask hangs around my neck, then when stuff starts to get serious I pull the mask up and put the boonie on.  I thin a ball cap is too structured and the shape just stands out to me, maybe to a turkey too who knows what those crazy birds are thinking... :funnyturkey:

I have a cap with netting that comes off the brim.  It offers complete concealment (see through, no eye openings) and since it's off the brim it doesn't touch your face and mosquitos can't bite you.  If I don't want the netting I tuck it up inside the hat.   I got mine at Cabelas and bought one for my son from Bass Pro Shops.

I have several masks, and it depends on how cold it is here in Michigan. I don't like the full mesh mask, as I agree, they are hard to see out of.

The full mask with an eye opening I have for my "leafy" outfit is nice, but I'm going to get one of the half masks so that I can just pull it up when the times comes. The full mask is uncomfortable & pulling it out and putting it on is a pain too. Half mask, all the way I say!

The hat I have is waterproof & is comfy. boonie style.

Still old school here and wear a Quaker Boy bandito mask. Doesn't seem to be as bad at fogging up my glasses. Those Under Armour baklava's are the ticket under the mask for cold weather. I wear one for fishing in the winter..keeps the wind off my face and ears.

Yea, Jason, don't forget they can hear you thinking and see you change your mind...hat on or off...mask up-down...no matter what you do they see it-hear it-suspect it-and hiding behind every tree-bush out there...we ain't got a chance....think I am going to quit...naw, just entirely too much fun for one individual to stand for such a short amount of time. Good hunting.

Ive always been a baseball cap and halfmask kinda guy. Although i used to wear a boonie hat back in my early days of turkey hunting back when i was still just a "Jake".Lol. I think ill invest in another boonie though. Got me thinking if your moving your head with a ball cap a bird is probably more likely to see movement from the brim of the hat than from a boonie which has the brim all the way around. Im probably overthinking this one though. Anybody know where to get a boonie hat in Bottomland?

I've got a preference for a half mask but in the end, I've killed just as many without a mask. I've shot several wearing short sleeved t-shirts and no mask in the past. I was younger, didn't "know better", didn't care, etc. I think we sometimes over think things as outdoorsmen. Concealment is nice but being stationary is equally as important. Only thing the camo does is conceal some of the movement. I'm not saying an older Tom won't pick you out at times. It happens and will certainly happen more often if not properly concealed but it's just part of the game. again, I'm not saying that it's not important, it may just not be as vital as we sometimes think. Also, if it weren't for sweating, I'd wear face paint. Less restrictive than all options mentioned above.

A loose netted face mask is the way to go for me. It keeps the bugs off of ya!  :turkey2:

just bought one off fleabay for 25 bucks shipped. Watch the sizing , bought a large luckily and it fits big. Almost got a extra large. Thought about cutting the mask out because I wear a half mask mostly. After getting it though I just think I will use it. Not bad at all and it never hurts to have a extra mask somewhere.
