Who makes a good custom tube call, and
What strikers do best on copper friction,
And a ceramic friction???
Tube calls? I can't run them but Pappy and Matt McLain make good looking ones.
I like a very hardwood striker on copper. African Blackwood, Dymondwood, Snakewood or even a very hard Purpleheart striker.
Ceramic? I love Black Locust on it.
I was using a purpleheart on both, but
Got an oak one an it sounds better on the
Copper, but the sound is not what I want
Out of it yet, and the ceramic has good
Sounding purrs with hickory, but everything
Else could get better, I look in to some
Of those, if anybody else knows anything
I'm all ears!!!!!
My tube call is from Lyle at Houndstooth. Joe Slaton makes a nice one as well. Can't go wrong with the ones previously mentioned either!
Tube Calls - Matt McClain, Joe Slaton, Pappy, Lyle Gilbert all have good reputations for building quality tube calls.
Strikers for Copper - Cherry, Osage, Zebrawood, Wenge, Yellowheart, Tulipwood
Ceramic - Couldn't tell you since I don't own a ceramic call
I've got a tube call from Matt McClain that is awesome, I can make great yelps, kee kees, and a killer gobble all from that one call. Several dead gobblers would attest. Pappy makes great tube calls as well from everything I've seen and heard...
Tubes-- Pappy or Matt McLain
Striker-- I like snakewood
I prefer softer woods on copper. Takes some of the shrill high out of it. To each his own.

there are several great call makers on here, striker wise, I love the laminates, dymondwood is sweet on all surfaces. Russell Beard makes a killer all weather striker, it runs great on just about any surface especially if you are in a wet climate. My tubes are proven hunters, and I love making them, but there are others here that make some nice ones too, Joe and Matt are two fine example.
