Title: Remington Extra Full Turkey Choke/ 21" bbl
Post by: Longshanks on February 06, 2015, 06:55:49 PM
Ordered a new 21" bbl for my Wingmaster. Came with a Remington Extra Full Turkey Choke. Has anyone been able to turn any decent 40 yd patterns with this choke? Win XX? HV? Hevi 13?,  Win LB's?

Nope. Only with TSS

I tried wlb #5 as well as hevi #5, #6, #7 and mag blends all 3.5in and got decent patterns at times but it was never consistent. The shots I did get good numbers on it seemed like there were alot of holes in the pattern as well. Just my experience. Good luck.

My short barreled 870 would shoot 3" Win HV #4's between 85-100 @ 40yds with the Extra Full.  Nothing else was even decent with it and my other 870 was terrible with anything through that choke.

It worked good for #4 buck though if it was legal for predators in your state.

At .687, that choke is pretty open. Would do fine with TSS, but with factory loads, I don't know. I inherited one a while back, but have never shot it. I would give it a go with some Winch LBs and see what happens.

Thanks guys, that will save me some money and time. I have another Ventilator .655 that I bought when I found them on sale for 12.99. I will start there after a deep cleaning and see what I can get going. Guess that extra full would be good for squirrels and home protection.

Betcha that .655 will perform much better.
It should pattern WLB 6's well or Hevi 6-7's

Yea man, I have turned some high numbers with Pb 6's and Hevi 7's out of that choke and a 870sm. Hoping that combo will do ok out of the wingmaster.

For a cheap choke you can't beat a ventilator.
Title: Re: Remington Extra Full Turkey Choke/ 21" bbl: UPDATE
Post by: Longshanks on February 09, 2015, 04:08:26 PM
Rem870 21" bbl/ Ventilator .655

Deep cleaned barrel, shot 20 or so rounds through the gun and then patterned.

Surprising results..tight patterns with 1 7/8 and 2 ounce Win Pb at 20yds. Terrible patterns at 40yds.

*patterns with 3" Longbeards terrible as well. Maybe 110-120 with 6's and 115 with 5's.

Back to the drawing board.

Bought a 21" 870 years ago, when they first came out. It came with the extra full.
Was quickly replaced with the Ventilator when i could get one.
Much better patterns.

Think the nut on the barrel loosened off by the time I started the 40yd shots..

Man that's surprising! I was getting over 200 with 3" #6 hevi out of my 21" barrel 870 using the Ventilator.  Other chokes were just ok but it came to life with the Ventilator

Yea, I'm hoping the nut loosening off was the problem. My 870sm 26" bbl shoots unbelievable with that choke. New barrel may need polishing if that's not it..

I'm using this same barrel choke combo with 2 3/4 handloads for my boys and it patterns pretty decent out to 30 yds.

It was less than 2oz.  Don't remember exactly.  The old white shells with the roll crimp.  1 7/8 maybe or 1 3/4.  But yes, 3" #6

I have the 24 inch rifle sight screw in choke barrel. Using a Remington super full .660

Winchester 2 3/4 xx lead 6's. This combo has taken many, many birds.

My nephew had the extra full that came with the express turkey gun and I believe it was a 21 double beaded barrel. Never found a shell that patterned well with it.

Found a undertaker .660 later on that worked well for it.

Rem 870 21" bbl..Shot again today..Extra full, Ventilator (XX, HV, LB's 5's, 6's)...nothing working at 40 yards.

*tight patterns at 20, decent patterns at 30..falls off big time at 40. (70's with LB 5's (extra full), less than 100 with Pb 6's  (Ventilator)

This is gonna be a tuff one..any thoughts?

what other shells you have?
Title: Re: Remington Extra Full Turkey Choke/ 21" bbl

 Hevi 13 3" 6's, 7's, magblends,  Hevi 13 3.5 6's, 7's, Fed HW 3" 7's.

HV 3" 5's, 6's.  XX 3" 5's, 6's, Thugs 3" 5's,  Supremes 1 7/8  5's, 6's

*problem is the Extra Full and Ventilator are the only two rem chokes I have. My other 870's have tru-choke threads in the barrel.

and go to work on that new barrel.
New to you or brand new?
My 26" had lots of machining marks in it, i polished the heck out it from the instructions on this forum.
Never did get them completely out
My 21" is from the early 90's and is like a mirror, got lucky i guess.

Lots of posts on this site with good patterns from the ventilator with some of those shells you have.
Use the search function ventilator.

21" bbl is new.

I have a Rem 870sm 26" bbl  that is a couple of years old and I had to have it professionally polished due to the machine marks in the barrel. It will turn 160's in a 10 with XX 3" 6's shooting a ventilator.  The new 21"bbl barrel doesn't look too bad but I guess polishing it is my next step.

Had the same problems with my 3" 21" barrel also.  Tried a Remington Super Full, Remington Extra Full, Comp-N-Choke .655, Comp-N-Choke .675, Remington Ventilator, Carlson's .665, Primos Jellyhead .665 & a Hevi-Choke .662. Never patterned worth a flip with lead loads.  Maybe some slightly decent patterns with Winchester HV Supreme #6's. Finally tried some Hevi-13 #6's & 7's & got some good patterns.

Year before last I used a Carlson's .665 ported with Hevi-13 #6's.  Last year I use a Hevi-Shot choke with Hevi-13 #7's.  This is what I'll probably be using this year. It put a up few more shot that the Carlson's & Jellyhead.  Just ordered a Truglo Strut Stopper Xtreme .643" Constriction to play around with.  If I was you I'd get some Hevi-13 #7's.

Yea I shoot them out of a few different guns. Bad to the bone. Let my gunsmith look at my barrel today and it looks pretty good. Just a few machine marks but not bad.  Got a Kicks .655 on a gift certificate today. Trying to build a lead shooter. I've never had a gun that Kicks wouldn't turn good patterns with lead. Got my fingers crossed.

I was wanting to get some good patterns with the Winchester HV Supremes (Black Hulls) with #5 shot. No luck so far.  That's why I shoot those expensive Hev-13's.

I've had 2 short barreled 870's and with a Kicks .655, a Kicks .660 and a Ventilator I barely average over 100 with lead HV #6's and lead #5's using the Kicks .660 because it threw the best overall pattern.  The Win LB #6's were 180+ from my short 870.

Mine is slinging Hevi 7's when it goes to the woods.

7's are business. I'm setting up a gun for my kids to hunt with on this one. . Knoxx Stock/  21" bbl/ Kicks .655. Would like to see a good pattern in the 35-40 yd range (100+ in a 10 @ 40) but the main thing is to get a pattern that's not too tight for the kids learning. I figure if I stay with XX, HV, and Supreme 6's  the patterns won't get overly tight in the 20-25 yd range. Probably gonna be shooting 2 3/4 inch shells at first then progressing to 3".
