Title: What to pack for an Osceola hunt
Post by: wvlimbhanger on January 23, 2015, 01:23:51 PM
I will be hunting the March 21 opener near Okeechobee, FL.

What are some things that are must haves for a FL hunt?

I've never been there and am only used to easterns in WV.

I take with me what I normally hunt with in Ohio. Haven't really needed anything else. Maybe take a thermacell and a gobbler lounge type chair. If you are flying less is better in my opinion

Take a jacket.  My one and only Osceola was shot on an apparently rare frosty morning in late March.  I was wearing everything I had taken to stay warm.  It's usually warm but be prepared! :toothy12:

Knee high rubber boots and a thermacell, that pretty much goes for all the Gulf Coast.

A thermacell and a can of bug spray with the hightest deet you can find, them skeeters is bad. A boat if its stays wet like it is your going to need one, down south that way most public land is wet in the dry season, unless your going to be on private land where they went in and dredged canals for drainage you will be ok.I would expect lots of water. Rubber boots or almost a must for locals that hunt all the time snake boots. Them moccassins are everywhere and you need to watch out for them pigmy rattlers when you sit down they like to lay beside trees, little suckers will put a whooping on ya.Oh and watch out for them scorpions if you sit up around dead trees, they hide in the bark they will sting you and make you sick. Warm weather clothes maybe a light jacket it be chilly in the morning untill about 9 when the torch get burning it gets hot quick. And gotcha is right a BIG wad of $$$$.

For sure stock up on the Thermacell pads and butane cartridges. A light jacket, rubber boots, Gobbler Lounger ( I have killed way more birds by being patient than running and gunning ) and plenty of water. Seems that no matter how chilly the morning starts out is turns hot before ya know it.

Snake boots, Thermacell, Gobbler Lounge and lots of water!! Other than that, it's pretty much the same as turkey hunting elsewhere.
As Turkeywhacker said, running and gunning for Osceolas doesn't work as well as for other birds that gobble more frequently. Finding a likely spot, sitting and calling periodically is the ticket for Osceolas.

Socks, plenty of socks . . . . I don't like tall boots so I have wet feet alot. But either way you will have wet feet, from the water or from sweat if you choose to wear tall boots. Thermacell refills are a must. A good gps if you're doing public.

Okeechobee should be the south zone. . . . that opener is March 7th.

Thermacell, snake boots, water, and a jacket because it will be cold in the AM.
