Post by: Fbcoach39 on January 21, 2015, 09:38:49 AM
I have a Mossberg 500a just curious what choke and shells do you guys think will be best out of this gun.  Thanks and I am sure I will have 1 million more questions.

A lot of guys on here including myself love the Winchester longbeards shells, others swear by Hevi 13 shells if you don't mind paying $30 for 5 shells. I've done it myself  :-[

Choke wise a lot of guns are different and like different choke/shell combos. Good chokes to try are the truglo ssx, hevi, jellyhead, or maybe hit up sumtoy on here (search user name) and try one of his custom chokes. I've never tried his but I've never seen a complaint on here about his products

thanks for the advice.  I am hoping to find someone that shoots a 500a Mossberg like mine and see what set up they use

Call William at Sumtoy, tell him what you got and listen to his recommendations in regards to chokes and loads.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and let him know how much you want to spend for shells, and he'll fix you up.  You could possibly find a tighter combo if you played around long enough but he'll point you to a solid turkey killer.

Looks like between me and gooser it sounds like sumtoy might be the way to go

Personally if you don't want to spend a lot of money right of the bat, try some cheaper chokes like a factory xxfull choke, or a primos tightwad, or an HS under taker. As for turkey loads try some superX, or turkey thugs from Walmart. I have heard they are impressive for for low end shells. The thing is nobody can tell works best in you setup, you need to try out a few loads, and get to know you're shotgun. The good thing is, and you may know this, but mossberg accu choke is the same as Win chokes, and browning, so you can look around you may find a good choke laying around somewhere that needs a little action! Best I can say is sling some lead!

The choke tube classified section on Old Gobbler can be a great place to shop and save some money....I have bought several from other members.

Big thing you got to figure the places you hunt.  If in the woods you keep shoots 30 and in shoot factory choke with Win XR.  If in Open fields you may want to step up to a aftermarket choke.  Now I like to see them around 650 with Win XR and 660 if HV13.

The question you have to ask yourself is how dead you want it.  100 in a 10 dead or 300 shoot in a 10 dead.  :funnyturkey:
