Mine came drilled and tapped from the factory so I guess they can be.  Call your gunsmith.

Find out from Winchester, some special guns you can't, it'll void the warranty?

It can be done but I would only trust a very skilled gunsmith to do it. He should use a thread locker on the screws that hold the base and the base should not be removed. It's okay to remove the rings and scope but the base should stay in place.

It's very easy to use the SX3 as a wing gun or for any other purpose with the base still on it and the scope removed by the way.

The receiver is aluminum and thick enough but since the screws are steel, if you install/remove them, you're just asking for trouble.

The receivers that are drilled/tapped at the factory have steel inserts.

Thanks,
Clark

P.S. While I was writing this "WilowRidgeCalls" posted some good advice about voiding the warranty.
