Title: Which thread pattern for my 20 ga project ??
Post by: Yoder409 on December 13, 2014, 03:26:24 PM
Earlier in the fall I posted about picking up a donor gun for a new lightweight turkey-smasher project.

Well............. I'm getting ready to send it off somewhere to have the barrel threaded to accept screw-in chokes.  Provided the barrel dimensions will support any common thread pattern, what are your opinions as far as one being superior to another, pattern-wise.

Granted the standard WinChoke or RemChoke will offer the best selection of cheap tubes.  But are there others that may be designed for better turkey patterns ??

I am looking to match the gun up to 3" Federal Heavyweight #7 shotshells.

Remington seems to have the greatest number of choices in 20 gauge chokes.  Whichever Mossberg uses seems to be almost equal in number of choices.

I'd say whichever of those matches the barrel diameter.  Mossy's tend to start out life with a bit bigger bore, Remington closer to standard size.

I have a single shot project underway myself.Baikal mp-18 youth 20 ga. I plan on having it threaded for Rem chokes. I did a lot of research and i believe rem choke threading is the best option . Ive only found affordable threading services done for 20ga in tru-choke,win-choke, and rem-choke. I'm also setting mine up for Fed hw #7s. It shoots them well from the stock mod choke barrel.105 in the 10" @ 40yds.But i get 140s with my 870 and those shells so id like to get the baikal in that ballpark with those shells.

Guess Jordan's post brings up Part B or C............wherever we are at..........of this build.

I know/have heard the Flitecontrol Federal's generally respond better to non-ported tubes.

Which tubes are giving you 20 ga. guys the best numbers with the Federal FC Heavy 7's ??

Actually have been eyeing his site up.

Does he install optic mounts as well ??  Gonna need a Weaver rail too, I believe.

as for the flight control wads, my girls shoot prairie storm for squirrel and duck. Patterns well out to 40-45 yards with a mod choke (they both shoot ESCORT). Hope that helps

I don't know William at Sumtoy, but have seen some impressive patterns shot from his chokes in pics on this site.  He has a good reputation here.
