Title: which striker do you think is more consisant
Post by: sleepyturkey on October 01, 2014, 12:42:07 AM
Been playing with all kinds of strikers receatly and want your alls opinion which do you think runs better/more consistly a one piece or a two piece striker? And i am not talking about junky strikers on either kind, i mean well known brands/makers and well built strikers. Thanks for your alls input. I used to feel strongly about one piece but the more i test the better i like the 2 piece strikers. I know some exotic woods are hard to get in dowell form but just your general thought please.

I normally don't care for two piece strikers but I have a few made by Lonnie Mabry that are as good as any one piece striker I own.

I only carry one striker anymore, and it is Diamondwood.  One or two piece, doesn't matter, they pretty much sound the same, and I make them either way.  In my opinion, they are the most consistent in their sound with varying Temps and humidity.  Just haven't found a natural wood that sounds as good or stays consistent  over varying conditions.

My choice is a one piece purpleheart on all surfaces.

Awesome!  I have the Apple Jack and about a dozen other colors in stock  also!  I put in a big order as soon as I heard Rutland burned down.

I'm also partial to a one piece striker.

After running one of yours I can see why. :icon_thumright:
I also prefer a one piece, and I have some really good ones made by members here on OG.

My go to has always been Black Locust but as some others have stated, Dymondwood is very strong.
I used it a lot last spring.

I have one of West Augusta's Dymondwood striker, and it will run good on them all. :icon_thumright:

I've been using 1 piece strikers for many years and love them but I made some 2 piece dymondwood strikers and they will be going with all of my glass pots this year. They sound great.

I talked with west augusta and will be trying a couple of his strikers. Really starting to like the dymond wood one piece from fred cox @ grandslam turkey calls especially on glass.

A one piece will be more consistent then a two piece striker, because you don't have a glue joint. A one piece will give you a much smoother sounding call consistently. For that reason, I prefer a two piece striker, because a live bird is anything but consistent, their tone changes with every call they make.

Strikers are so subjective... it is really hard to say what is best.   The two best strikers that I own are a one piece dymonwood from Woodyhaven and a 2 piece hickory striker.  But I also went through hundreds to find them.

A one piece dymonwood is the best all around most consistent striker for me.  A hickory 2 piece is a very close second.  But just because you glue up a 2 piece striker, doesn't mean they wiil be good.  some suck!!!  have never picked up a one piece dymonwood that I thought was bad.

Some dymonwoods will be better or worse because of the dimensions used by the call maker.  the ones that have the big fat domed shaped tips with a thicker shaft at the bottom are like trying to use a fence post from the back 40.  Dimensions matter.

Monkey Wood is the bomb for a one piece also!!! closest stuff I have run that rivals a dymonwood, but dimensions really matter with this stuff.  Jerry White sells one of the very best out there, if you do a little tweeking to the tip!!!

The fake dymonwood stuff is garbage for a striker in my opinion, way to light in weight.

When people say they carry a dozen strikers with them hunting so they can sound like a bunch of different turkeys, I chuckle.  Get one or two really good calls and a couple great strikers and you can sound like dozens and dozens of turkeys, if you learn how to run them the right way instead of depending on stikers to make the different sounds, you will be better off.    But to each his/her own as to what they want to run and use.

Well said Sadler...my advice is keep your calls and strikers at home and just carry Sadler in your pocket :TooFunny:
