Title: Mossberg 835 with Star Dot choke
Post by: matchbook454 on July 09, 2014, 07:48:01 AM
I've heard a loy of guys say that the Star Dot is "the" choke for a Mossberg 835 but they are very hard to find.  Well, I found one.  Just wondering what loads shoot best out of this combo and what kind of 40 yard numbers I might get?  Might go and pattern this weekend if the weather allows.

Hevi 7's are unbelievable with yer combo! Expect counts of 300 @ 40 in the 10" using a 3.5" shell...

I've got an 835 with a 24" barrel and a 935 with a 26 incher, neither gun has seen 300 with any choke including my Star Dot. The 835 shot the Hevi  7's with the Star Dot the best (low –mid 270's) all other loads tried shot best out of my Indian Creek .675. The Star Dot only beat it out with the Hevi 7's and not by much. Now in the 935 the IC beats the Star Dot with every load tried. I'm currently running it with Nitro's 2 7/16 oz. load of straight 7's and I'm still unable obtain 300 with any combo of shells or chokes.  Other chokes tried in both guns – Jellyhead .690 and Mad Max .695.

Only 200 with Hevi 7's?!?!?!  I just got 253 with Hevi 3.5" 6's and 247 with blends.  Have you polished youe barrel?  Those were with a Tru Glow SSX.

I get 210 average with my 24" 835 and star dot using hevi 3.5" 2.25 oz #6s.

Dirt Road Ninjas IC shot terrible in my 835 with the same load, but shoots fantastic in his guns. Just states that to say you need to try different chokes and loads to find what you want in a pattern. I never wanted 300 cause it is just too tight for me. DRN will attest I have missed with the more open pattern because I get worked up pretty bad when a bird is gobbling and coming.

After re-reading my post it may sound that I was disappointed with the Stardot. I'm not and out of the 5 or six 835's and my 935 that I've seen shot or that I've patterned myself, the Stardot threw wicked patterns with all HTL loads. Plenty enough for rolling birds way past forty yards.  My IC just seems more consistent. Here is what I remember my 835/Stardot.

Hevi 13 2.25 7's - 265-275
Hevi 13 2.25 6's - 180-190
Magblends 2.25 - 190-205 best was 215ish
Nitro 2 7/16 7's - 250-270

All of these numbers are from memory, but they were all shot at a ranged (lasered) 40 yards and counted honestly. Anything north of that I would consider great. Like davisd9 said what worked for me did not for him. You might have to try another choke if your looking for 300, but I can all but guarantee you will get a great pattern with that Stardot and 2.25 oz loads of the smaller HTL.

My 835 that has a Pittman Bossbuster (very similar to the StarDot) and it averaged in the 230's with 3.5" Hevi-13 7's at 40.  I am back to shooting Win HV 3.5" 5's and it puts out a nice even pattern at 40 with that load as well.  Also if you want 300 at 40 I'd be gettin' a scope too!  That's way to tight at 40 for the shots you will actually have at gobblers.
