Title: Hens nesting
Post by: Jim K on June 18, 2014, 08:50:47 PM
Out of a 100 hens, how many do you think nest? The reason I ask is where I hunt there are hens with gobblers all spring long. There are hens around with poults now but still lots of hens without poults. I know that first year hens don't always nest. Just wondering. What do you all think?

I've been wondering about this as well.  I've been surprised by the hens I've seen that were clearly not nesting late in the season...still with toms...and now with no poults.

Late spring is bad for birds. At least up here. If they hatch late and we get an early winter they are small going into the cold season.

Late nesters I found poults in August,  a few years back when we had lots of rain here in Ohio .

Saw my first poults yesterday. Somewhere around 8-10 of them. They looked to be around 3or4 weeks old.
