This may be an unanswerable question outside of simple saying "you have to shoot at both ranges to see". But is there a typical percentage your pellet count inside a 10 inch circle drops from 40 to 50 yards. For example if you were putting 250 inside 10 at 40 what would you expect to see it drop off to at 50.
In my experience with hevi13 #6s Ive seen an average drop of around a 100 pellets for every 10 yds.

Oh yeah you are right on the money.. Back when I shot a 12 a bunch you would shoot at 40 and have over 200 with 6s and shoot at fifty and I was astonished how much the pattern dropped off.. Its worse with 7s
i just took a look at my notes and it is about 100 lost per 10yd change, it was also interesting that it was around 100 for my htl and lead loads
Thanks guys

About 95 to 100 on average I loose between 40 and 50 yds. My 1 3/4 oz #6s will throw 295 at 40 and 200 ish at 50.
#6's!?! That is awesome for 6's!
What is your set-up and is that factory ammo?!

After reading this, I remembered I had some pics of last years patterns and went to take a look. The following is with 1 7/16 oz TSS 9's using an 870 20 gauge with a Primos Tightwad choke.
April 6 – 40 yards: 300 pellets in 10" circle
April 19 – 50 yards / 70 degrees: 213 pellets
May 16 – 60 yards / 79 degrees: 173 pellets in 10"
194 pellets in 20"

WOW That is a awesome pattern for that amount of shot :icon_thumright:
Shooting 3 1/2" Hevi 13 "6's out of an old Remington .665 Hevi Shot tube mine went from 224 @40, to 114 @50, to 92 @60 before polishing. I tried to post pics but I get a message back saying they exceed the size limit and I have no clue how to reduce them. As others have said it dropped exactly 110 from 40 to 50 then much less to 60.

Today we patterned a 23'' Remington 870 whit a JEBS HEADHUNTER .655 whit hevi 13 '3'' no6 at 60 yards. We video the shot whit RANGER KEITH BYERS & MR DEWEY JONHSON . A 20 mile crosswind and put 172 shots in 20'' circle . Turkey hunter.
my 870 sm with rhino .660 and nitro 517t 4x5x7 puts 331 in a 10" circle at 40 yards and 284 in a 10" circle at 52 yards. (all distances measured with laser range finder)
Usually 100 per 10yds on avg. You have to shoot a bunch of them to get an avg and reasonable expectation, 1 shot will not tell you much. IME it takes around 320 hits at 40 to have a 60yd count of 100 or greater with hevi.
Also remember than shooting paper on a calm warm day is a huge difference from a cold or windy morning in turkey season.
