Title: Dealing with ants while hunting?
Post by: Marc on May 16, 2014, 12:59:56 AM
We have some awful red ants where I hunt here in California (not as bad as fire ants, but still very unpleasant)...

I am hoping that someone has a better way of dealing with them than I do (which is to jump up in pain, frantically swatting myself, generally just as a bird is coming to the gun)...

Bites are painful, and frequently ants are around all the trees that I would sit on...

Any sprays or repellents that work?

I am guessing that I will just have to live with them, but wondering if any of you out there have come up with any cool tricks to deal with them.

No help on how to repel them (doubt there is anything), but it seems like ole Gooserbat has a story to tell about SE Oklahoma fire ants from this season!  :funnyturkey:

Fire ants are nasty stuff...

Had an experience with them in Florida while in school there...  Fishing a canal off a main highway, and I had no problem removing my pants and jumping into a canal that I had just seen a large gator in...

I hoped that maybe someone had a little trick...  I have thought about ant spray...  There was a downed tree this season that would make for a perfect hide and a great place to take a child, but loaded with red ants...

Got into red ants on multiple occasions this season, and ruined an opportunity for my father to kill his first turkey ever.

Carry a can of deep woods off. Spray a ring around you when you sit down. They won't cross the line.

and spray the tree you're leaning against.
