Title: New Weatherby Sa-08,which choke
Post by: Red Huck on May 14, 2014, 11:28:48 AM
Got a new Weatherby  SA-08 Semi with a 28" barrel. Plan to use it for Doves in the fall, turkeys in the spring. I would like to shoot  fed hw or hevi 13.I usually shoot Carlson chokes, never had a problem get a pattern out of them that would do the job. But I see others here prefer sumtoy, or trulock chokes? It looks like Carlson's and Trulock's  are a .575. Not sure what the number on the Sumtoy mean 562 5? Suggestions, also not sure about shooting #7s.

I have the 28 inch model. I hunt with a sumtoy 562-5. It puts up 150+ type numbers with federal 7s. The 5 after the 562 designates how many stripping rings are inside the choke. He also makes a 3 ring that is recommended for lead, hevi, and tss. The 5 ring is made for federal Heavyweights.

I have also shot the following chokes and they yield these numbers out of my rig. Ive shot 20+ boxes of federal shells to compile my data.

Swarm 555......80 to 90 at 40
Puregold 570( ported)......110 type numbers
Puregold 570 tempest.......100 to 110 numbers with 7s, 120+ numbers with federal heavyweight 6s.
Puregold 555 tempest.......85 to 100 type numbers
Hs strutt.....80 to 90 type numbers
Truglo ssx.........140+ with 7s, 115 to 125 with federal 6s
Sumtoy 562-5.......150+ with 7s, 100 to 120 with 6s

Tanks for the info SAVDUCK! Picked up some shells from basspro when I took my wife to an antique mall in Concord, Fed. HW 6&7. She spent as much as I did in basspro on clothes. Going to order  a choke from Sumtoy next week.

I have the youth model and run the sumtoy 562-5 with fed hw #7. I didn't hunt with it this year but it consistently puts up 130-140 numbers. I tried lots of different combos and thanks to the fine folks on here I'm dialed in.

I have the youth model also, 24" barrel.  Through an Indian Creek 0.555 choke, Hevi13 #7 gives me 150 at 40y.  Same choke with lead #6 is good to 35y.
