Title: Mossberg 535 Problems
Post by: grayfox on March 27, 2014, 09:15:58 PM
I have a Mossberg 535 that sometimes the trigger won't pull when the safety is off & you try to pull the trigger.  It did it a while back when I was patterning it but I thought I had not closed the bolt good & tight.  While hunting with it last Friday morning it did the same thing again while my step dad was trying to shoot a gobbler I had called up for him.  He said he slid the safety back on & then back off & it fired then but he missed the turkey.  He was upset because it was his first experience at turkey hunting.  I felt really bad for him.  We shot it again yesterday to check the red dot to make sure it was still right.  I then loaded it with a Winchester#5 Supreme.  When he pulled the trigger it snapped but the shell didn't go off.  First time this had happened. It had a very slight dent in the primer so we tried it again & it fired.  Has anyone else had any problems like this with any of their 535's.  Right now it's at a local gun smith.

I am unsure if the 535 is built internally the same as an 835 and 500 but I assume it is.  The safety button attaches to an internal block that slides back and forth to block a part of the trigger mechanism.  I know if the bolt holding the stock on is too long it will extend into the receiver interfearing with the safety mechanism.  Have you replaced the stock on the gun?

Skeeterbait the stock is the original stock that came on it.  I've tried to make the gun do it again but to no avail.  It does this very seldom & so it may be a problem to duplicate.  If the gunsmith can't figure out what's going on with it I'll check that bolt on the stock when I get it back.  I do think it has something to do with the safety when the trigger won't pull but I don't know about that light primer strike though.

I bought mine at Christmas time, so far I had one shell that would not fire. I am not real happy with the gun, but I'm stuck with it now.

I bought this one from a friend of mine last year to use mostly as a backup gun & for friends that want to go with me turkey hunting. It's been working great for about 99% of the time but it really stinks when one don't work when a gobbler walks in.  Those instances are just too hard to come by.

I've had mine for about 5 or 6 years and have never had a shell not go off or had the trigger not pull.  Hopefully you get this resolved.

I picked up a 535 a few years ago brand new, i shot prbly 40-50 shells out of it to pattern and sight it in withou any problems. Then the first turkey i tried to shoot with it the gun wouldnt fire! It clicked when the fireing pin went off but no bang!

I took it home and over the coarse of the next few weeks it did it 2 more times with different ammo while at the bench. It went bye bye, it sucked because i did like the gun but just had no faith in it anymore. Hindsight tells me i should have just sent it back for repair but as they hadnt been out very long i just figured that there mite have been other "bugs" that hadnt reared their uglyheads yet.

This is my 3rd Mossberg I've had over the years.  It's the first one I've had any problems with.  I really do like the gun. Maybe the gunsmith can find the problem, if not I'll send it in to Mossberg.

Send it back to mossberg, they will make it right. Trigger has an adjustment screw on it, and if there is not a little take-up, the safety block can hang on the tang safety and cause it not to fire. It can also cause the safety to not be re-ingauged. As far as not firing, a few things can cause this. Escess oil in bolt/firing pin assembly, water damage in bolt/firing pin assembly, and the most common on a 535, is the barrel not being screwed down all the way into the reciever. 535 can be a real pain to get seated back into the reciever all the way and this something to pay close attention to.

I noticed that the barrel did not want to go in all the way. Poor craftsmanship, I finally got it down.

Thanks everyone.  Some good information on things to check for.
