Title: 870 SUPER-MAG CHOKE RECOMMENDATIONS?
Post by: NC_10 on March 23, 2014, 03:25:59 PM
Looking for recommendations concerning a good choke and load combination for a Remington 870 super mag 3.5"  26" barrel. A friend new to turkey hunting has purchased it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Pattern pics greatly appreciated also.

Thanks

Jelly head seems to be a good combo with the 870.

I got really good results with my SM using JH .660 and Hevi #7.  Also good results with JH .665 and long beard XR #6.

I have the same gun with a 28" barrel and use a Jellyhead .665 with MagBlends. Here is a link to my pattern pic. http://oldgobbler.com/Forum/index.php/topic,42351.0.html

I have a Super Mag with a 26" barrel, and get great patterns with .660 Jellyhead and also the Hevi-Shot .662 tube. I use Hevi-13 7's and Longbeard 6's both in 3 1/2".

Indian Creek fan here but if your trying to reduce costs go with the JellyHead

I have the same gun and I would pick either a Sumtoy or a Ballistic Specialties, and if your on the cheap look at a regular unported HS Undertaker for around $20-$25.

I have 3 870's one is a SM, one is a SPS-T, I use .665 in all of them.  Shooting Winchester supreme HV #5's.  At 40 yards the .665 shoots Longbeards so tight I won't hunt with them.  I shoot a Briley straight rifled chokes, but I think any .665 choke will have good results.

My 870 Supermag shoots well with either a Jellyhead or the Hevi 13 choke numbers wise.  The Hevi 13 choke won me over on overall pattern evenness.

I have that same gun, which is my primary turkey gun.  I've shot a half-dozen chokes (Rhino, Jellyhead, IC, etc.), and the Patternmaster Code Black by far patterned the best.  Inside a 20" circle at 40 yards, I get 90% plus patterns with TSS and Hevishot.  Kinda expensive (around $100) but when I have a strutter in my sights, the cost is irrlevant.

I'd go with one of these.

Indian Creek .665
SumToy
Patternmaster Code Black .665

I'm shooting an 870 supermag with a 26" barrel and shooting longbeard 3.5 #6's.  I recently shot my gun and got 267 in a 10" circle at 40 yards with a Kicks GT (.665).  Needless to say, I'm very satisfied.  With that being said, I don't think you go wrong with any of the recommendations on your post.  My gun has had the forcing cone lengthened, so I'm sure that helped as well.  I've seen people complaining about ONLY getting 180 hits, which amazes me!  180 at 40 yards is still awesome.  I'm sure you will find something that works, but regardless I'm a believer in the Winchester Longbeard!  Hope that helps and good luck!
