Title: MS birds in my neck of the woods behind schedule
Post by: northms on March 17, 2014, 09:34:58 AM
In north MS it was a frustrating weekend.  Had one gobble about 4 times on the roost saturday morning and two of those were shock gobbles.  Once he hit the ground he was henned up and didn't hear another gobble all day.

On Sunday the weather was awful and the birds had been rained on all night so I didn't figure they'd gobble and sure enough they didn't.

This isn't completely unusual for my neck of the woods on the first weekend but the lack of birds strutting in normal areas has me down in the dumps.  Gonna have to shake it off and get back after them next weekend.  And oh yeah, it was down to near freezing last night and will be again tonight.

Anyone in MS experience any of this too?

I posed a question a few weeks ago if birds would be behind it might be a week or two like most said and hopefully nothing drastic but I do believe it will be the same here with them being behind the temps are not looking the best the next 10 days. Friday has the highest at 69 but a lot of nights in the 30-40 range.

been like this the last 2-3 years down here in south central Ms.
the birds don't get started up until the 2nd or 3rd week of the season, they think it's still winter time, and today at work it felt like winter

Mississippi has no monopoly on late birds.  Same thing in south central Alabama.  Was this way last season also.  Didn't fire up till start of week 3.

Sounds like turkeys being turkeys (Not meant to be a smart $&@). It's hard to remember sometimes that they don't adhere to our schedules. Give em some time. It's only the first inning of the game and a lot will change in the coming weeks. Good luck
