Rem 870, 23 in barrel. Will be using Hevi-13, 3 1/2, 2 1/4 oz shot, number 6. Any suggegtions on chokes before I go thru a couple hundred dollars of ammo??
JH .665 for the #6 and .660 for the #7

And again having tested the PureGold, IC, JH and SXX in a 870SM 23VR barrel I would "highly" recommend that you purchase a PureGold .670
Good Luck ~ Hunt Safe ~ Take Lots of Pictures.
I would recommend Indian Creek .665 for your Remington.
PG 670 is what I got in mine. Nice even hunting pattern.
My setup
870
Hevi 13 3.5" 2.25oz #6s
.665 Indian creek
194 in a 10" circle at 40 yards
I only shoot once
I have had 2 of the 870's with 23 inch barrels. Both of mine like the IC and the Ventilator (Remington factory choke).
660 or 665 Jelly Head. For the money hard to beat
Out of my 870 with a 23" barrel shooting Hevi 13, 3", 2oz, #6, I use a PG. Throws an awesome pattern!
OK guys, keep them comming. Looks like a Pure Gold and a Jellyhead. Any others??
What are some numbers people have got before with the 6s and pure gold? I have heard people take about them but have not seen numbers??
I have seen high numbers with a 835 and pure gold but not from a 870

The best in my 870 23in sm is I.C.665 i would "highly" recommend it with the same set up
definitely a JH .660, 230 in 10 inch at 40yds with H-13 #6's
Come on people.... lets see the pictures of the amazing patterns. :smiley-char092:
This was with an .665 Indian Creek and H13 7s
Temperature was around 30 deg
In warmer temperatures I got 324
Im at work and dont have those pictures though

Each load I have only patterned once in warmer conditions. I can also say I have a friend who got around 205 at 40 yards with the 6s using a .665 Indian Creek. I believe he had a 26" barrel however.
What is the price tag on a Indian Creek tube look like?
So those are 3 1/2" 2.25 oz. shells? What I want to see is proof of these numbers from bowhunter2k9 "JH .660, 230 in 10 inch at 40yds with H-13 #6's" I would take it that these too are 3 1/2" shells.
Here is a Injun Creek 665 with 3" H 13 7s.. Weather wasnt ideal as this gun was thrown together in a hurry.. (http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj34/byle1/100_07152.jpg)
yea, i'd be happy to Bird. I don't have the pics from last yr on my comp so i'll go shoot this weekend hopefully and post em up
HA! I found one old one that is really dark, not quite 230 but I could have moved the circle and got it. 223 in a 10 inch at 40 yds... Rem 870 JH .660 with 3.5 inch H-13 #6's.

Bird, did you ever try a JellyHead .665 or .660 in your 870?
Yes I did.... It did so horrible that it wasn't even worth the time to continue to waste shells, time, energy or picture space on them. I sold that choke real quick here on OG last year since everyone thinks they're such a great choke for the money. I found differently.
Now that's what I'm talkin' about. Finally some pictures to back up those numbers. :icon_thumright:
Theres another thread on here when there are three guys that have got 220 and up with a .660 Jellyhead
After seeing those results IMO a .660 jellyhead is the choke for a 870
Bird in your patterns I noticed you are not drawing the 10" circle around the densest part of the pattern. It could be that .660 jellyhead had a different POI.
So bird now highly recommends ssx lol

I would never recommend that Chinese made piece.

my mistake...
No problem buddy.... we're cool. You're alright in my book. :icon_thumright: :z-guntootsmiley: :icon_thumright:
I dont really think there is a major difference many people believe the 3" shells pattern better. My buddys pattern was better then mine and he was using the 3" shell and i was using the 3.5" shell
Your SSX patterns was basically the same as my pattern with the 3.5" shells.

What do you mean there's no difference.... A 3 1/2" shell hold more BB's.... :bike2:
I gave the SSX a test ride last year after the season. I was not impressed at all. Shot the 6 and 7 Hevi shot through it. Best I was able to get was 155 in a ten at 40. The ICBDS did well with both shot sizes with 230 in a ten with the 7 Hevi shot. The best I have done with a 3" shell was 202 in a ten at 40 it was with the "old" Mad Max choke tube and Hevi #5 in the white hull shells.

Thanks for pointing that out now look past the obvious and look at the patterns people have posted. There are many examples of the 3" shells putting up better numbers then the 3.5" shells. My friends pattern was better then mine and he was using the shell with less BB's
Gobble. I must agree with you my 1300 only shoots 3" shells but 2 3/4 patterns better all the time. Go figure I am no scientist but I think the fewer pellets trying to squeze out the all at the same time send off less flyers. Again no science to back it up just seems to make sense.
I'd like to see more 870 / pure gold patterns; I am going to get one and compare it to the choke Im currently shooting. Im getting great patterns from win xrd 6's,(180's and up) hevi6s (210+)and hevi 7's (300 +) from a kicks .660 and my 870sm with 23"bbl.

this is my 870 with a 21" barrel shooting the PG with the Mag Blends at a taped 40yds.
Here's what I did with my 870 Super Mag.....
I set it up with Williams Firesights and called William at Sumtoy. I told him the range and performance I was looking for. He listened and recommended his Sumtoy .650.
Hevi-13 6's (2.25oz), a sumtoy .650 and my 870 shot 241 pellets in a 10" circle at a measured 40 yards.
I will never hesitate to call sumtoy again before I call anyone else about choke tubes.

Here's a pattern from my 870 28" barrel out of a Pure Gold .670 shooting Hevi-13 3" 2oz #7 at 40yds.
