Need some help with a new gun I am passing my old remington down to the kid I hate to be looking for a gun when season is just 2 weeks a way but she reminded me that my grandfather give me that gun when I turned 16 and now it here turn with it so for the last 20 plus years I have not even looked at a new shotgun so any info on a new turkey gun would be appreciated
This has been debated hundreds of times on dozens of forums with no winner declared. Fact is they are both excellent turkey guns and you won't go wrong buying either one. Just go look and hold each and buy the one that feels best to you.
Flip a coin. Can't go wrong with either. I currently have an 870 but my hunting buddy has an 835 and both will slay gobblers
Shoulder them and see which fits you better. IMO, the best pure turkey gun is the 835, but to each his own. Both are great guns and the ones that I would consider.
870 in my opinion
never had a problem or miss with my 835 and i beat the crap out of it every turkey season. kicks like a mule though
I've hunted with 2 870's, 1 835, and now a 935. Both pumps were as equal in slinging lead as the other. The 935 slings it as good and being a auto the recoil feels lighter to me with 3.5's
870
Either one is a great choice, I have both. I prefer either one, but I will add that Mossberg has an easier trigger group to work with than Remington if you are wanting to modify take-up.
Can't go wrong either way, both are great guns and both have super customer support if a problem arises.
I've owned both. Killed turkeys with both. The 835 was a tad heavier, had a longer barrel, and had a few rattles that I didn't care for. My 870 now has a shorter barrel, is easier to carry and patterns slightly better. All that said, an 835 can still be a heck of a gun...870 just worked better for me. No right or wrong answer here. Pick the one you like and start experimenting. :z-guntootsmiley:
I own both and either gets it done. Just my experience but my 835 with the .676 Stardot patterns better with turkey ammo. Don't overlook the BPS. Probably the best compromise out there. If waterfowl and dove hunting are on your plate as well then a BPS with a 30" and a 24" barrel woudl be hard to beat. Get a Indian Creek .665 screwed into the 30" tube and never look back. reflexl
Thanks for the help I'll be looking at them tomorrow
My vote is for an 835. You can't beat the patterns with the Mossbergs.
I was a die hard mossberg fan. I really like my supermag. Imo a definite difference in quality. These new mossbergs just feel cheap imo.

If you could find a good used one in either gun it would be awesome. I have a new 870 SM and it's probably the cheapest feeling gun I've ever shot. I've been looking locally for a deal on an older 870. Just might have found one today, going back monday to look at it and an older mossberg 835...
Even Nitro company has had problems with the newer 870's patterning. They say they are very finicky and require more time in patterning...
Just my 2 cents...
Good luck with whatever you get!
I have both currently, and I will tell you both are great shooting guns. I think the 870 is the better built gun. The 835 is a better pattern gun. But like others have said, you can't go wrong with either.
Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag :happy0167:
Flip of a coin.........
I feel the same as Skeeterbait, I own both and have killed turkey with both , see which one fits you the best and go from there, therewith good guns.

Thanks for the help after going to the gun shop today I went with moss 935
My 935 is mean with the ssx choke
835
I think you will love your 935. I walked in a gun shop almost 3 years ago looking for a semi auto turkey gun (after trying a pump and hating it "I know some guys love them")and walked out with a 935 and still glad I did. Just wish I had got it sooner. Congrats!!
Is it going to be strictly a turkey gun?
They both make a great gun but since you have used an 870 since you were 16, that's what hour familiar with, so I would stick with that.
Can't go wrong with either
870 but i wish it had the thumb safety
the past few years I was wanting to get a new turkey gun. I wanted a pump. I narrowed my search to either a 835 or a 870. before buying one I wanted to feel both of them in my hand and shoulder the gun. also I didn't know if I wanted a 20-14 inch barrel.
I went to Gander Mountain and I personally liked the Remington 870 better. The Mossy 835 felt cheap. on the mossy 835 the fore-ends rattle. the Remington 870 fore end does not.
for me the 870 was best. I ended up buying a 870 supermag 21 inch barrel from Dicks sporting goods.

As just about everyone has said, both are excellent turkey guns. Doris and I both have several 870s and I just ordered a new 835 with the Mathews Harmonic Damper system to join its older brother. I also have Mossberg 500s, a 935, a 930 and a SSi-ONE.
Mossberg has won me over in the last few years because they are listening to what we as shooters want. They quality is excellent, the reliability is great and the customer service is unsurpassed.
Thanks,
Clark
