Title: Have you hunted LBL before ?
Post by: rpinks on March 13, 2014, 07:31:38 PM
Got a draw to hunt 8th and 9th. Fished both lakes for years however never hunted the area. Will only get to scout 1 day, 3 hr drive. Will be hunting Kentucky section. Due to the size wanting to narrow area. Would you focus on north or south half ?  Thanks

If he gobblers over three times you better be killing him....because if you don't some bozo will run him off.

Seems I hear this alot about LBL talking about the pressure you would think a quota hunt would be more enjoyable without all the pressure

Hunted it for several years just due to the fact me and my buddy would be camping in the spring turkey hunting season and fishing for crappie in Kentucky Lake. We scouted that place intensely and you better be on your game when you hunt down there cause those. Don't get shot!

If a bird does respond to the call be ready they go silent and like to play peek a boo. Most will stay below the ridgeline and peek up to see a hen/hunter calling. Toughest birds I've ever hunted. I did manage to kill a few birds down there, but I earned them...bout got shot once, got cut off by other hunters a few times, walked many a mile, dealt with controlled burns by the DNR..I rarely called to birds much in LBL due to other hunters. Call sparingly, be very cautious of other hunters and plan to walk as far as you can get from any road and you can kill a bird once in a while. PM me and I can give you some good locations to start out.

Problem is they draw too many slots.....less pressure on the later open hunts.

I read this a lot about LBL but a guy I work with goes there a week every year and kills one. He's originally from that area so maybe he has some inside info. He really looks forward to it every year.

Can you access from a boat? May be the ticket, I have fished in the back of a lot of those creeks and it looks like some sweet terrain in there!

Thanks to all for replying to my post. However the hunt goes I will have a great time and should I harvest a bird I will consider it a bonus.  Thanks again

They're are roads and trails all over the place...no need to get in a boat.

:happy0064: IT will be my first time hunting as well there, with only Friday to scout before
the 12-13 hunt. Plan to backcountry camp, get at em early, and keep my head down from what I read.

Its a blessing for me just to be in the woods, but I hope to be able to play the game with 1 or 2 though..

Ive mapped out a few spots, plan on checking those Friday eve. All south TN section, west side.
Good luck to all, stay safe out there
