Title: Pattern Advice
Post by: silvestris on March 09, 2014, 10:34:22 PM
Trying to get a good pattern from my 3" 20 gauge Remington 11-87 with a Rhino 575.  It is for my grandson.  I would appreciate any input on shotshell recommendations from those with similar setups.

I am not satisfied with the 3" Winchester XX Magnum #5s.  Thanks.

20" barrel; choke adds 2" for 22" total barrel length.

Federal Heavyweight Flite Control 7's.
3" shell, 1 5/8 oz load.
Seems to be the ticket for most 20's.
NOT recommended for ported chokes.  Not sure if that Rhino is ported or not.

My guess would be you need to try another choke rather than taking the easy way out by reverting  to pixie dust sized shot to compensate for a choking problem.

Do you have a suggestion, Frank.  At this point, I fear I am limited to a change in shotshell as our first hunt is Saturday.  My present pattern is a probable at 30, but probable don't cut it.

Those 5's will reach out war further than your pattern will likely hold up - just a suggestion

I'm willing to bet your shooting about a 70-80 count pattern at best @ 40 yards , if you want a good 30-35 yard gun your there , if you want to fill out the pattern with more pellets try a shell with smaller pellets , or htl

The magblends....I have a 20 tricked out with those for my son , it gets about 110 with that shell - but watch out .....those shells will kick the snot out of a small kid -  they are stout , I tried them in a light 20 ga pump and it cleaned my clock - in your auto it may be manageable

My Kid's and Dad use Hevi 7s and are getting 120 or so in 10"@40 from a Charles Daly 20ga/Jelly head .570/ 24" barrel and a Rem 11-87/Tightwad (can't recall constriction)/26" barrel. Dead turkeys to 40 yards and a few steps further on one shot last year.

Doris uses that same gun but with a different choke, and it's a killer at 40 yards with 3" Hevi-13 with 1.25 oz. of either #6 or #7 shot.

I'd recommend that you try those shells this time. Later, you might want to consider a different choke with them in that short barrel.

Thanks,
Clark

Thanks guys for the info.  Clark, would you go with more or less constriction?

I'd try some #6 hevi, or go hunt down a 25 round box of Win XX 3" #6.  I did that for my boy back when he was shooting a 20 and they worked great.

Winchester XX or Federal 3" #6's with a .575 Carlson choke

Doris uses a .550 SSX in her gun.

Thanks,

My sons old setup used to be a jellyhead with extended range #5's. I didn't think a 20 could shoot a pattern @35 yds that would rival a 12, but it did!
